Lady Roadrunners golf opens first season

William Woods (Sept. 18-19) The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners golf team opened their inaugural fall season at the William Woods Fall Invitational at the par 72 Tanglewood Golf Course in Fulton. The Lady Roadrunners finished fifth as a team, shooting 363 in round one and a 368 in round two for total of 731.

Amelia Morris recorded the best finish for SFCC. Morris finished 24th (tied) with scores of 93 and 84 for a total of 177. Ava Kirkpatrick finished 30th with scores of 90 and 93 in the second round for a total of 183. Hannah LeGrant finished in a tie for 31st with scores of 87 in round one and 97 in round two for a total of 184. Alena Scrogham finished tied for 35th with scores of 93 in round one and 94 in round two for a total of 187. Kennedy Wrisinger placed 39th with scores of 94 in round one and 98 in round two for total of 192.

"Our team had their first opportunity to play tournament golf at the collegiate level," said Lady Roadrunners head coach Chris Guffey. "Our goal was to shoot in the 360's as a team on both days and we did that. Overall, we played well. We know we are capable of so much more, but at the same time to finish in the top five as a team in the first tournament of our program's history is special."

Marlee Andrews competed as an individual. Andrews shot a 107 in the opening round followed by a 106 in round two for total of 213 to finish tied for 43rd.

Fort Scott (Sept. 20) SFCC fell 4-2 to Fort Scott Community College in a match play format.

LeGrant lost the first match 7 and 5. Kirkpatrick lost the second match 2 and 1. Scrogham picked up the victory in match three 6 and 4. Morris lost the fourth match 5 and 3. Wrisinger won the fifth match 3 and 1. Andrews lost the sixth match 2 and 1.

"This is the first time we played match play format," said Guffey. "The scores were not reflective of our actual play. We just struggled to understand the format and compete at the level we hoped for. When we had chances to close out holes, we struggled to putt well. There were some holes that we didn't have any course knowledge on and didn't play properly. It's been a great week for SFCC Women's Golf, but tonight we just didn't do what we needed to compete and win the match. Tomorrow we will start working on those things to be prepared in three weeks for our tournament at UCM."
