SFCC falls at Arkansas Baptist

The Lady Roadrunners traveled to Little Rock, Arkansas, on Feb. 11 to take on Arkansas Baptist College. SFCC (14-8) struggled from the free-throw line making only eight of 23 attempts (34 percent). ABC won 62-61.

"We played well the first half," said Assistant Coach Rich Biddulph. "Arkansas Baptist played a full-court, man-to-man press the entire first half. We were able to get some easy transition points because of that. I was pleased with the 12 or 14-point lead we built in the second quarter. Unfortunately, we couldn't extend our lead in the second half."

At halftime, the Lady Roadrunners went into the locker room with a 37-23 lead. In the second half Arkansas Baptist switched defenses and went to a full-court, zone press and began to get back into the game.

"There were several lead changes in the final minute," said Biddulph.  "We executed a side out-of-bounds play where Danae' Cole drove to the basket, drew defenders and found Alexis Cowan for a basket to put us up one point. We called our last timeout to set up our defense, and they scored with about 11 seconds to go.

"We got a good look on offense, but we missed. We fouled to stop the clock and Arkansas Baptist missed both free throws. We got the rebound with about three seconds remaining. We pushed up the sideline, got trapped and couldn't get off a good shot."

Cole led in scoring with 14 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. She also contributed a team-high five assists. Ahjana Oakes added 10 points. Ren'Cia Rolling contributed a team-high three steals. Grace Morrow registered a team-high seven blocked shots.

Before the game the Lady Roadrunners visited the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site where they learned about the integration of Little Rock Central High School.

SFCC will play at 6 p.m. Feb. 14 against the Missouri Valley College JV in the Davis Center.
