Lady Roadrunners split pair of games at the Lady Raider Classic

The 18th ranked Lady Roadrunners traveled to Poplar Bluff Nov. 11-12 to participate in the Lady Raider Classic. On Friday SFCC (2-3) defeated the Shawnee Community College Lady Saints from Ullin, Illinois, 63-47. On Saturday SFCC took on the Wabash Valley College Lady Warriors from Mount Carmel, Illinois, and fell 81-73.

In the first game, the Lady Roadrunners led Shawnee 33-24 at halftime.

"It was a close game in the first half," said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. "We'd gain a small lead, but we never extended it. We went to a smaller lineup in the fourth quarter, and that helped extend our advantage."

The Lady Roadrunners were led in scoring by freshman guard Takayla Gunter with 15 points. Sophomore center Kendra Boone added 11 points and blocked a team-high three shots. Sophomore guard Danae' Cole contributed 11 points, grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and recorded a team-high four steals. Sophomore guard Alexis Cowan dished out a team-high five assists.

In the second game of the classic, the Wabash Lady Warriors led 43-36 at halftime.

"Wabash Valley is a good athletic team," said Bucher. "They would take the lead, and then we'd cut it to three or four points. We tied the game a couple times, but we were never able to get the lead."

Cowan led the Lady Roadrunners in scoring with 26 points and recorded a team-high five assists. Boone pitched in eight points. Cole pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Cowan and Gunter tied for the lead in steals with three.

The Lady Roadrunners next game is Nov. 18 against Central Community College from Columbus, Nebraska, which is during the Stone Laser Imaging Classic in the Davis Center. On Nov. 19 SFCC will take on Malcolm X College from Chicago. Tipoff both nights is at 5:30 p.m.
