Lady Roadrunners go undefeated at showcase

The Lady Roadrunners basketball team traveled to Lawrence, Kansas, Oct. 22 to participate in the Mid-America Showcase. SFCC went 3-0 at the event. The game format was four 11-minute running clock quarters.

SFCC took on Independence Community College from Kansas in their first scrimmage. The Lady Roadrunners got off to a slow start against Independence; however, they bounced back and defeated Independence 43-32.

"We put together a nice stretch between the end of the first quarter and throughout the second quarter," said Lady Roadrunners Assistant Basketball Coach Rich Biddulph. "The energy from our bench picked up, and it translated onto the court. Our defensive intensity increased, and we were able to get some easy transition baskets."

Coach Biddulph was pleased with some of the individual performances in the game against Independence.

"Takayla Gunter and Catie Kaifes hit big shots for us," said Biddulph. "Kendra Boone made nice plays inside. We shot the ball pretty well as a team. Maya Brewer made some nice plays in transition. Amani Williams hit three three-point shots in that game."

The Lady Roadrunners defeated Coffeyville Community College from Kansas 66-51 in their second game.

"We got off to a great start in the game against Coffeyville," said Biddulph.  "Ahjana Oakes made some shots for us. Grace Morrow showed us some things in that game; she did a great job of rebounding and finishing inside. Our zone offense gave Coffeyville a lot of problems. The biggest play of the game was Danae' Cole diving for a loose ball; she was able to save it, and we got a layup out of it."

SFCC took on Highland Community College-Kansas in the final game. SFCC found themselves down 9-2 to start the game but went on a 23-0 run from the end of the first quarter to the beginning of the third quarter. The Lady Roadrunners defeated Highland 45-26.

"We picked up our defensive intensity," said Biddulph.  "Our players really saw the benefits from all of our conditioning in this game. Ren'Cia Rolling performed well in this game, and Maya Brewer played well. Aaliyah Cowan and Alexis Cowan sparked us defensively throughout the day. They also rebounded the ball well. During our 23-0 run, Kendra was around the block and sprinted toward a loose ball at the top of the key and was able to dive and retain possession. You really like to see that type of effort from your starting center."
