Lady Roadrunners participate in basketball showcase

The Lady Roadrunners basketball team traveled to Frisco, Texas, on Oct. 9 to participate in the Southwest Women's Junior College Showcase. SFCC left with a 2-1 record. The format for the scrimmages was four 10-minute running clock quarters.

SFCC took on Southwest Mississippi in the first scrimmage. The Lady Roadrunners jumped out to a 23-8 lead in the first half. Southwest Mississippi outscored the Lady Roadrunners 21-8 in the second half, but SFCC claimed a two-point victory.

"We were able to steal the ball with our half-court trap early in the game," said Lady Roadrunners Head Basketball Coach Kevin Bucher. "We struggled to make shots in the second half, but we were able to hang on and get the victory."

SFCC took on Johnson County Community College in the second scrimmage and lost by 13 points.

"We had a height advantage in the game against Johnson County, but we were unable to benefit from it. We continued to struggle offensively. We went to a smaller lineup against Dodge City and were able to press and run in transition."

The Lady Roadrunners took on Dodge City in the final scrimmage and won by about 30 points.

"We were able to shoot the ball well against Dodge City," said Bucher. "We handled the ball well against them."

Coach Bucher was pleased with some of the individual performances from the weekend.

"Alexis Cowan and Aaliyah Cowan played well," said Bucher. "At times, Catie Kaifes and Takayla Gunter shot the ball well. Maya Brewer, Amani Williams and Ren'Cia Rolling played well, and Danae' Cole hustled hard."

The Lady Roadrunners will travel to Lawrence, Kansas, for the Mid-America Showcase on Saturday, Oct. 22.
