Lady Roadrunners fall at Mineral Area

The 19th ranked Lady Roadrunners saw their four-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday, Jan. 23, falling to the Mineral Area College Lady Cardinals 67-60 in Park Hills. SFCC (17-4, 4-1 in Region 16, 3-1 in the MCCAC) got on the scoreboard first with a basket from freshman center Kendra Boone on the first possession of the game.

Mineral Area led 16-12 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Cardinals pushed the advantage to 33-24 at halftime. SFCC cut the advantage to three points, courtesy of a three-point basket from sophomore guard Sierra Clayborn in the third quarter. However, Mineral Area held off SFCC in front of a big homecoming crowd.

"It was a great atmosphere," said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. "We played hard, but we just came up short. I thought our freshmen played really well for their first time on the road in region play. We made a few mistakes here and there that cost us the game. We didn't shoot the ball as well as we have been."

Sophomore forward Thelma Williams led three Lady Roadrunners in double-figure scoring with 16 points. She also pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds. Sierra Clayborn contributed 14 points and her sister Seara added 13 points. Sierra Clayborn, sophomore guard Zhanesha Dickerson, freshman guard Danae' Cole, Seara Clayborn and Williams all tied for the team lead in assists with three. Seara Clayborn also registered a team-high three steals. Williams led the team in blocked shots with two.

SFCC will return home on Tuesday, Jan. 26, for another key conference contest against St. Louis Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center on the Sedalia campus.
