Lady Roadrunners Open Region Play with Victory

The 18th-ranked Lady Roadrunners emerged with an 80-44 victory over the Three Rivers Lady Raiders Jan. 8 at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center in the Region 16 opener for SFCC. The game was also part of the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference schedule.

SFCC used a 20-0 run to open the second half to extend a 10-point halftime lead.

"We were able to use our full-court pressure to wear Three Rivers down," said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. "Most of our games have been close in the first half. The second half has been our half, and tonight was the same way. I was very pleased."

Five Lady Roadrunners scored in double figures. Freshman guard/forward Zhanesha Dickerson led with 18 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore center Alecia Cooley just missed a double double with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds and also led the team in steals with five. Sophomore guard Derriel Banyard also added 12 points. Freshman guard/forward Tyisha Saunders and freshman guard Sierra Clayborn pitched in with 11 points each. Freshman guard Maura Skidmore dished out a team-high six assists. The Lady Roadrunners forced Three Rivers to commit 25 turnovers in the contest and SFCC also racked up 21 assists as a team.

"I was very pleased with our players tonight," said Bucher. "Our intensity starting the second half really made the difference in the game. We just have to keep improving over the next several weeks."

SFCC will hit the road for the first time in region competition Jan. 14 when the Lady Roadrunners take on the Moberly Area Community College Lady Greyhounds at 5 p.m.
