Softball continues season with victories

March 11 Moberly Area Community College at Sedalia

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners softball team split a pair of Missouri Community College Athletic Conference games with Moberly Area Community College, dropping the first game 9-1 before bouncing back to win game two 4-3 at Mandy Thomas Field in Sedalia on Monday, March 11.

In game one, the SFCC offense was held to three hits. Catcher Paige Klinge had a hit and scored the only run for SFCC. Outfielder Jaelyn Winfrey and first baseman/second baseman Danika Sickle had one hit each. As a team, the SFCC defense committed six errors.

Pitcher Grace VanDenburgh got the start for the Lady Roadrunners. VanDenburgh pitched four innings, gave up six runs (two earned runs) on nine hits, struck out three and walked one. Pitcher/utility player Aireanna Hoeppner pitched one inning, gave up three runs on three hits, struck out three and walked one out of the bullpen.

In game two, utility player Bailey Haselhorst recorded a double and a triple to go along with a run scored. Outfielder Becca Hall had a double and a run scored. Middle infielder Sami Picha had a stolen base in the game. Winfrey also had a double and scored a run. Middle infielder/outfielder Jordan Crooks also scored a run. Third baseman Myla Inman drove in a run.

Pitcher/first baseman Kiara Sodini got the start for SFCC. Sodini pitched 5 1/3 innings, gave up three runs on nine hits, struck out one and walked four. Charlee Reese pitched one inning in relief, struck out two and walked one.

March 12 Missouri State University-West Plains at West Plains

SFCC swept a Region 16 and Missouri Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader against Missouri State University-West Plains 12-8 and 14-3 in West Plains on Tuesday, March 12.

In game one, Klinge led the SFCC offensive attack with three hits, including a double, three RBIs and a run scored. Picha doubled three times, scored three times and had two RBIs. Inman also had three hits and an RBI. Haselhorst contributed a home run and a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Haselhorst also stole a base in the game. Winfrey added a pair of hits and two runs scored in the game. Middle infielder/outfielder Emily Burke had a pair of hits, including a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs. Hall drove in a run and scored twice. As a team, SFCC had 17 hits in the game.

Reese got the start for SFCC and pitched six innings and gave up seven runs on 13 hits. VanDenburgh pitched one inning and struck out one.

In game two of the doubleheader, the SFCC offense continued its strong performance. Haselhorst just missed hitting for the cycle with a double, a triple and a home run. Haselhorst registered three RBIs and scored four times. Shortstop Maliah Kenney had three hits, including a double, a home run, three runs scored and an RBI. Klinge had a pair of hits, including a double and three RBIs. Sickle had a pair of hits, including a home run, two RBIs and a run scored. Crooks hit a home run and drove in three runs.

Hoeppner went the distance for SFCC. Hoeppner gave up three runs (two earned), struck out five and walked three.

March 16 Metropolitan Community College at Kansas City

SFCC swept Metropolitan Community College 7-4 and 3-0 in a pair of Region 16 games in Kansas City on Saturday, March 16.

In game one, Sodini hit a home run and drove in three runs. Winfrey had a pair of hits and an RBI. Inman added a run scored and an RBI. Sickle had a run scored and an RBI. Burke had a hit and an RBI.

Hoeppner pitched six innings for SFCC. Hoeppner gave up three runs on three hits, struck out five and walked four. Sodini pitched one inning in relief, gave up one unearned run on two hits and struck out one.

In game two, Crooks had a double and an RBI. Winfrey had a hit and two RBIs. Hall, Klinge and utility player Bella Ochoa each scored a run in the game.

Reese tossed the complete game shutout for SFCC, gave up four hits, struck out four and walked one.

March 17 Crowder College at Sedalia

SFCC (11-13, 6-2 in Region 16) lost a pair of games to Crowder College 13-1 in six innings and 15-8 at Mandy Thomas Field in Sedalia on Sunday, March 17.

In game one, the SFCC offense was held to one run on six hits. Klinge hit a home run and drove in the only run of the game for SFCC. Winfrey and Haselhorst had a double each in the game. Hall, Picha and Sodini each recorded a hit.

VanDenburgh pitched 5 1/3 innings, gave up 10 runs on 15 hits, struck out five and walked three. Reese pitched two-thirds of an inning and struck out one.

In game two, Picha had three hits, including a home run, a run scored and a run batted in. Winfrey had a pair of hits, including a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs. Haselhorst had a pair of hits, including a home run, three RBIs and a run scored. Klinge added a double. Hall hit a home run. Kenney also hit a home run.

Hoeppner got the start for SFCC. Hoeppner pitched five innings, gave up 10 runs on 13 hits, struck out three and walked one. Reese pitched two innings in relief, gave up five runs on five hits, struck out three and walked one.
