Softball game recaps Feb. 27- March 3

Feb. 27, Kansas City Kansas Community College at Kansas City, Kansas

The Lady Roadrunners took the field in game action for the first time in almost two weeks against the Kansas City Kansas Community College Blue Devils in a doubleheader. KCKCC swept the Lady Roadrunners 6-5 and 4-2.

The Lady Roadrunners scored first with a single run in the top of the third inning and tacked on two runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-0 lead. They added another run in the top of the sixth inning. Kansas City Kansas got on the scoreboard with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 6-4 advantage. SFCC scratched one run across in the top of the seventh, but that was all they would get.

Sophomore pitcher/outfielder MacKenze Gudde led the Lady Roadrunners offensively with two hits, a run scored and three stolen bases. Sophomore middle infielder Mikayla Gustin launched a home run, contributed two runs scored and two RBIs.

Freshman pitcher/first baseman Madison Love went the distance for the Lady Roadrunners, allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out seven.

In game two, Kansas City Kansas scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning. SFCC tied the game with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Kansas City Kansas took the lead back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to close the scoring.

Love led SFCC offensively with three hits. Gudde and freshman catcher/infielder Lauren Watkinsrecorded one RBI each.

Freshman pitcher Macy Buzzanga got the start in the circle and went the distance, allowing only two hits, four runs – only one earned run, and striking out two.

 

Feb. 28, Central Methodist University Junior Varsity at Fayette

SFCC traveled to Fayette to take on the Central Methodist University Junior Varsity in a doubleheader. SFCC lost the first game 9-1 in five innings. They fought back to earn the split in game two winning 14-4. Both games ended in five innings via the run rule.

In game one, Central Methodist opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. SFCC struck back with one in the top of the fourth. CMU broke the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Gudde and freshman utility player Emily Wilson recorded the only two hits in the game for SFCC. Wilson drove in a run. Freshman catcher/third baseman Gabi McGinty scored a run.

Love got the start in the circle for SFCC and pitched 4.1 innings, giving up eight runs on six hits. She struck out nine.

In game two, Central Methodist opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning. SFCC took the lead with three runs in the top of the third inning and added five in the top of the fourth. Central Methodist added three in the bottom of the inning. SFCC scored six in the top of the sixth to pick up the win and snap a four-game losing streak.

McGinty had a good game at the plate with two home runs and seven RBIs. Freshman middle infielder Kylie Johnson registered two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Gudde scored three runs and stole two bases. Love also stole a pair of bases.

Buzzanga got the start in the circle for SFCC. She pitched four innings, allowing four runs and only three earned runs on four hits

 

March 3, Fort Scott Community College at Fort Scott, Kansas

The Lady Roadrunners split a doubleheader against Fort Scott Community College, losing the first game 8-5 and bouncing back to win game two 11-7.

In game one, SFCC scored two runs in the top of the third inning. Fort Scott answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the lead. SFCC tied the game with a single run in the top of the fifth. Fort Scott took the lead once again with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the bottom of the sixth. SFCC made a late rally, scoring two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but it was not enough.

McGinty led the Lady Roadrunners offensively with two hits, including a home run. She also scored twice and drove in two runs. Love had a pair of hits and drove in a run. Johnson had two RBIs in the game.

Love went the distance for SFCC in the circle. She allowed eight runs, only three earned runs on nine hits, while striking out four.

In game two, SFCC (3-7) opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning. Fort Scott answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead and added a run in the bottom of the fourth. SFCC got its offense rolling with three runs in the top of the fifth inning, one in the sixth and five in the seventh. Fort Scott tried to chip away late, adding two runs in the bottom the seventh, but SFCC held on for the victory.

Gudde led the Lady Roadrunners' offensive attack with three hits and three runs scored. Wilson registered two hits and three RBIs. Love drove in a pair of runs. McGinty added two hits and three RBIs. Gustin had two hits, including a home run and three RBIs.

Buzzanga got the start in game two for SFCC. She pitched five innings, allowing five runs, three earned runs and seven hits. Love pitched the final two innings in relief, allowing three hits and two runs.

"We continue working on how to limit the big inning," said Head Coach Lyndsey Talbot. "Our team did a nice job of bouncing back and winning game two in our doubleheaders against Central Methodist and Fort Scott this week."
