Roadrunners pick up first victory of the season

September 12 John Wood Community College Quincy, Illinois

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Roadrunners claimed their first win of the season with a 3-2 victory over John Wood Community College on Tuesday, September 12 in Quincy, Illinois. The victory was head coach Michael Poropat's first at SFCC.

The Roadrunners opened the scoring with a goal from Oscar Garcia off an assist from Jervan Matthew in the 29th minute. SFCC took the 1-0 advantage into halftime. Matthew scored a goal in the 48th minute to extend the SFCC advantage. Dario Catalan scored a goal in the 63rd minute with assists from Garcia and Matthew.

John Wood got on the scoreboard in the 69th minute, and then again in the 78th minute.

SFCC made the plays in the final 10 minutes to secure the hard-fought victory. Bruno Bas Berdiel and Garcia tied for the team lead in shots with three each.

Kamryn Bridges made six saves in his start in goal.

"I felt good for our guys to get the victory," said Poropat. "They worked hard, I thought we had been unfortunate in some of our results. I thought we earned everything that we got last Tuesday. We had a lot of guys who played well."

September 16 Metropolitan Community College Kansas City, Missouri

SFCC (1-4-1) fell 2-1 to Metropolitan Community College in a Region 16 match on Saturday, Sept. 16 in Kansas City.

Garcia scored for SFCC in the 15th minute off a penalty kick. Metropolitan Community College got on the scoreboard with about 14 minutes remaining in the opening half off another penalty kick. MCC scored again with about three minutes remaining in the match.

Adrian Fernandez got the start in goal for SFCC.

"I thought our guys worked hard in the match," said Poropat.
