Roadrunners go undefeated for the week

Sept. 8 Metropolitan Community College at Independence, Missouri

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Roadrunners picked up an important 3-1 victory against Metropolitan Community College in Independence, Missouri on Wednesday, Sept. 8.

SFCC freshman midfielder Zakariya Abdi scored in the 16th minute with an assist from freshman forward Francisco Zubia. Sophomore midfielder Tebello Ntene added another goal in the 22nd minute off a pass from Abdi. Zubia scored with an assist from sophomore defender John Mlondani in the 43rd minute to give SFCC a 3-0 lead at halftime.

Metropolitan Community College scored a goal in 87th minute.

Freshman goalkeeper Wesley Morrison got the start in goal for SFCC and made two saves.

"Our team played well and dominated pretty much the whole game," said Roadrunners Soccer Head Coach Jaime Beltran. "We were able to put together a good performance against a good team. Now, the question is can we be consistent and keep doing those things."

Sept. 11 St. Charles Community College at the Fred E. Davis Sports Complex

SFCC took on St. Charles Community College, the sixth-ranked team in a NJCAA Division II Men's Soccer Poll, at the Fred E. Davis Sports Complex on Saturday, Sept. 11 in a back-and-forth battle that finished with a 0-0 draw at the end of double overtime.

St. Charles had a great scoring opportunity from a penalty kick, but Morrison proved to be up to the task with a diving save with 38 minutes and 30 seconds remaining in the opening half. Both teams played well defensively and kept the match scoreless.

Ntene had a team-high five shots, two of which were on goal. Zubia registered four shots, two of which were on goal.

Morrison got the start in the net for SFCC and made nine saves.

"Both teams were evenly balanced and both had some chances," said Beltran. "Our defense and our goalkeeper came up big. Wesley made some very good saves. You always want to win, but at the end the day after looking at everything, the tie was probably a fair result in that game."

Sept. 12 Southwestern Illinois College at the Fred E. Davis Sports Complex

SFCC (4-2-1) picked up a 1-0 shutout victory over Southwestern Illinois College at the Fred E. Davis Sports Complex on Sunday, Sept. 12.

Ntene scored the only goal of the match with 13 minutes and seven seconds remaining in the opening half with an assist from Zubia. The Roadrunners finished the game strong both offensively and defensively to secure the victory.

Morrison got the start in net for SFCC.

"That was about as dominant as a 1-0 game can be," said Beltran. "We felt like we were in control the whole time. Everyone that participated in this game contributed. It was good to be able to close out a tight game by using our entire team."
