Men's soccer game recaps for Sept. 13 and 16

Sept. 13, Metropolitan Community College-Maple Woods at Kansas City

The Roadrunners fell 3-1 in the match against the Metropolitan Community College-Maple Woods Monarchs. All of the scoring in the match took place in the opening half. Maple Woods scored three times with the last goal coming at the 34-minute mark.

SFCC got on the scoreboard courtesy of a goal from freshman midfielder Vasbert Ledger off a pass from sophomore forward Mako Makoanyane at the 43-minute mark.

"We got off to the slowest start that we have had all season," said Head Coach Jaime Beltran. "They weren't themselves, and it took them too long to wake up. In the second half, Maple Woods got across the midfield line twice. We were all over them, but we just couldn't find the net. We dug ourselves too big a hole to get out of. I liked our response in the second half, but we have to play all 90 minutes."

Sophomore forward Aaron La Paz led with six shots and three shots on goal in the match. Freshman forward Lesia Thetsane added two shots and one shot on goal in the match. Freshman goalkeeper Landon Dove made three saves.

Sept. 16, Lewis and Clark Community College at Sedalia

The Roadrunners hosted the 17th ranked Lewis and Clark Community College Trailblazers from Godfrey, Illinois, and lost the match 3-1.

Lewis and Clark scored first with about 30 minutes remaining in the first half. SFCC scored a goal by freshman defender Hunter Crowden off an assist by freshman midfielder Vasbert Ledger with about 28 minutes, 30 seconds remaining in the opening half.

The Trailblazers scored again with less than 26 minutes left in the opening half to take a 2-1 advantage. Lewis and Clark added another goal with about 22 minutes, 30 seconds remaining in the game.

Sophomore forward Mako Makoanyane led with three shots. Ledger and sophomore forward Aaron La Paz added two each. Freshman goalkeeper Landon Dove got the start in the net and made five saves.

"We made a couple of mistakes in the back," said Head Coach Jaime Beltran. "Once they got it sorted out, we were okay. Now we go back to work and get ready for more region play next week."

The Roadrunners record currently stands at 4-3, 1-1 in Region 16.
