Men's soccer game story Aug. 31 to Sept. 2

Aug. 31, Barton Community College at Sedalia, Missouri

The Roadrunners opened the home portion of their 2017 schedule with a 1-0 overtime win against the Barton Community College Cougars from Great Bend, Kansas.

SFCC put together a good defensive effort, including a save by a field player who cleared a ball off the goal line in the closing minutes of regulation. SFCC found themselves in overtime for the second time this season.

With about 40 seconds remaining in the overtime period, the Roadrunners seized an opportunity with a free kick from freshman midfielder Vasbert Ledger. SFCC executed a set piece to send the home fans away happy. Sophomore forward Mako Makoanyane found the back of the net off a pass from freshman forward Lesia Thetsane. The goal was the second for Makoanyane this season.

Freshman goalkeeper Landon Dove picked up his second win in goal for SFCC. He made nine saves to secure the shutout.

"It was definitely a back-and-forth game," said Head Coach Jaime Beltran. "Barton had some good opportunities. They probably had a few more opportunities than we did. Our defense played a solid game. Our goalkeeper was outstanding. He bailed the defense out a couple of times, and the defense bailed him out a couple of times. Barton is a very solid team. I thought we played well."

Sept. 2, Iowa Central Community College at Sedalia, Missouri

The Roadrunners hosted to the Iowa Central Community College Tritons and suffered their first defeat of season falling 3-1.

SFCC missed a golden opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the first half with a penalty kick. 

Iowa Central scored with a little more than 19 minutes remaining in the opening half. The goal was the first allowed by the Roadrunners this season.

Iowa Central scored again inside the 31-minute mark of the second half to make the score 2-0. SFCC fought back to make the score 2-1 courtesy of a goal from freshman defender Alois Buchillet, with less than three minutes remaining in the second half. The goal was his first as a Roadrunner. Freshman midfielder Vasbert Ledger got the assist. Iowa Central put the game away on a goal scored with about a minute and 45 seconds left in the game.

Freshman forward Lesia Thetsane and Ledger led the team in shots with two each. Freshman goalkeeper Landon Dove and sophomore goalkeeper Reece Gabbert each played a half in goal for SFCC. Dove made two saves and Gabbert made three saves.

"We need to do a better job of taking advantage of our goal scoring opportunities," said Head Coach Jaime Beltran.

The Roadrunners record currently stands at 2-1 on the season.
