Roadrunners win season opener

Roadrunners win season opener

The State Fair Community College Roadrunners traveled to St. Charles on Tuesday, Aug. 23, to take on the St. Charles Community College Cougars. SFCC (1-0-0, 1-0-0 in Region 16, 1-0-0 in the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference) used a strong defensive effort to pick up a 1-0 shutout victory. This is the team's first victory since the resumption of the program.

"The game was really even in the first half," said Head Soccer Coach Eddie Horn. "I was pleased with our ball possession and build up in the back third and middle third of the field. We missed some passes and some players didn't take shots when they had them. Overall, it was a pretty solid first half."

The Roadrunners got on the scoreboard when freshman forward Omar Hayes scored off a pass from  freshman forward Brendan Hofeigns about eight minutes into the second half. Hofeigns was able to get the ball wide, and when a St. Charles defender stepped to him, he slipped a pass to Hayes.

Reece Gabbert recorded the shutout in goal for the Roadrunners.

"I thought our back four, which consisted of Max Martin, Vlad Varshytsky, Roberto Ramirez and Yusef Shoune, played well, " said Horn. "They played lockdown defense, and Logan Horn and Mako Makoanyane were good in the midfield for us. Brendan played a nice ball to Omar, and he did a nice job of finishing the goal."

SFCC continues their three-match opening road trip at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, when they take on St. Louis Community College for another Region 16 and Missouri Community College Athletic Conference match.
