Lady Roadrunners Soccer Game Recaps Sept. 11-14

Sept. 11 Metropolitan Community College at Kansas City

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners took on the Metropolitan Community College Wolves on Wednesday, Sept. 11 in Kansas City in an important Region 16 game, losing 2-1.

MCC got on the scoreboard with about eight minutes gone in the first half.

"I felt like our team played better," said Lady Roadrunners Associate Head Coach Dan Martin. "We've been working on a lot on possession and winning the ball back when we lose possession. We gave up a free kick in the first half. The shot hit the crossbar, we got caught ball watching and they had three runners that just tapped it in."

With about three minutes gone in the second half, SFCC responded with a goal from sophomore forward Ria Kessell of Jefferson City off of a pass from sophomore midfielder Kimberly Rosas of El Paso, Texas.

"We responded well in the second half," said Martin. "We were able to create some chances. Ria scored off of a good through ball from Kim. Ria beat the keeper one-on-one."

The game remained tied until the 83rd minute when MCC scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal off of a corner kick.

The Lady Roadrunners took 11 shots in the game, four of which were on goal. Sophomore midfielder Melissa Martinez of Bolivia took four shots, one of which was on target. Sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Curphey of Raymore got the start in the net for SFCC. She made seven saves in the game.

Sept. 14 St. Charles Community College at Sedalia, Missouri

The Lady Roadrunners took on the St. Charles Community College Cougars in another important Region 16 game on Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Fred E. Davis Sports Complex. SFCC fell by a score of 3-1.

St. Charles opened the scoring in the 15th minute. They took a 1-0 advantage into halftime. The Cougars would add two more goals in the 58th and 76th minute to extend the advantage. SFCC got on the scoreboard with a goal from freshman midfielder Kyleigh Skoufos of Boonville off of a pass from freshman midfielder Briana Balandron of Lone Jack.

"It was fantastic to see our team continue to battle down 3-0," said Martin. "The best part was that Kyleigh scored a goal on her birthday. She is new to soccer. She did exactly what was asked of her. We asked her to put pressure on their defenders and Briana followed up the play and forced the turnover. Kyleigh put pressure on the goalkeeper and was able to finish the play."

Rosas and freshman defender Maleah Ray of Columbia, Missouri took two shots apiece to tie for the team lead. Sophomore goalkeeper Atziry Plascencia of El Paso, Texas got the start in goal for SFCC. She registered five saves.

SFCC (0-9, 0-3 in Region 16,) will host Southwestern Illinois College on Saturday, Sept. 21. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. from the Fred E. Davis Sports Complex.
