Women's Soccer Region 16 tournament recap

Oct. 24, quarterfinal round against Metropolitan Community College-Maple Woods at Sedalia

The Lady Roadrunners made history by picking up the program's first postseason win over the Monarchs. The match was tied 1-1 after two overtime periods. SFCC advanced to the semifinal round on penalty kicks 4-3.

SFCC scored first with about three minutes, 14 seconds in the first half. Freshman forward Bianca Meza scored with an assist from freshman midfielder Raleigh Johns.

Maple Woods struck back in the opening minutes of the second half to tie the game at one. SFCC had chances to score in regulation and overtime but was unsuccessful.

"We had one mental mistake that led to the Monarch's only goal, but at least it didn't cost us," said Head Coach Jaime Beltran. "Our players were able to dig deep and get back in the game. We had several opportunities in the overtimes. Fortunately, the penalty kicks went our way."

Both teams were successful in the first two penalty rounds. SFCC freshman goalkeeper Trinity Sigler came up with a huge save in the third round of penalty kicks, and SFCC scored in the third to take a 3-2 lead. With the score tied 3-3 in penalty kicks, freshman forward Jessica Coble stepped up and buried the final goal to secure the victory for SFCC.

"I was confident in our shooters because I knew it could come down to this," said Beltran. We've been practicing penalty kicks at the end of every practice for about the last three weeks. I thought it showed in the way we took our penalty kicks."

SFCC registered 15 shots with nine on goal in the match. Sigler registered nine saves.

Oct. 27, semifinal round against St. Charles Community College at St. Louis

The Lady Roadrunners saw their season end in the semifinal round of the Region 16 tournament. The Cougars defeated the Lady Roadrunners 3-0 and went on to win the tournament.

"We started the game well," said Beltran. "The first goal that St. Charles scored our goalkeeper got her foot stuck on the turf and the ball trickled by her. That caused us to have to play from behind and take chances we might not have taken. After that, it was an even game. We had a chance to make it a game when we were down 2-0. We had momentum but missed a penalty kick. St. Charles got the third goal a little bit after that, and that sealed it for them. We kept working, but we just couldn't get a goal."

Sophomore forward Tiffany Wehmeyer and freshman forward Cierra Sawyers recorded one shot each on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Trinity Sigler recorded nine saves.

"The girls gave it all they had and left it all on the field," said Beltran. "We were troubled the entire season by a lack of depth," said Beltran. "We will get that corrected. The team did well; we had some good games even if we didn't get the results we wanted. We were competitive in every game; hopefully, we can use this season as a launching pad to keep growing."

The Lady Roadrunners ended the season with a 4-12-2 record.
