Lady Roadrunners soccer game recaps, August 22-27

August 22, Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) at Kansas City, Kansas

The Lady Roadrunners opened their second season of competition on August 22 taking on the Lady Blue Devils. SFCC dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision; KCKCC outshot the Lady Roadrunners 7-4.

The Blue Devils scored at the 14-minute, 35-second mark of the opening half. They had six shots on goal during the match to one for the Lady Roadrunners. SFCC held a three-two advantage in corner kicks for the match.

Freshman goalkeeper Jessica Coble recorded six saves in her first start in goal for SFCC. Sophomore forward Tiffany Wehmeyer recorded four shots, three of which were on goal. Freshman midfielder Ally Brown recorded two shots.

"The girls started the match a little tentative," said Head Coach Jaime Beltran. "I'm not sure that they were very confident in what they were doing at the beginning of the game. You could see them start to grow in their confidence in themselves and the system as the game went along. In the second half, we had several opportunities to tie the game, but the ball just didn't go in."

SFCC defeated the Lady Norse 3-1. The Lady Roadrunners scored the first goal by Tiffany Wehmeyer. She took a pass from freshman midfielder Raleigh Johns in the 14th minute of the opening half.

Wehmeyer found the net again in the 36th minute of the first half. Sophomore forward Kristen Farrell provided the assist. Sophomore defender Sarah Garcia closed the scoring for SFCC in the 74th minute of the match, courtesy of a pass from sophomore defender Morgan Coffman.

"We picked up right where we left off against Kansas City Kansas," said Beltran. "We did a nice job of playing our possession game and moving the ball well. We were able to create a couple of opportunities early in the game, and on the second or third opportunity, we were able to put the ball away. That gave us the confidence to keep going."

Jessica Coble picked up her first win in goal for SFCC. She recorded six saves.

The Lady Roadrunners record is 1-1 and will open the home portion of their schedule on Thursday, Aug. 31, against Barton Community College at 2 p.m. at the Sports Complex.
