Men's basketball opens preseason schedule

The Roadrunners had their first opportunity to scrimmage against another team on Oct. 7 at the Mullen/Mitchell Dallas Junior College Blowout. SFCC went 2-2 at the event.

The Roadrunners opened their portion of the event against East Mississippi Community College. SFCC erased a six-point halftime deficit to emerge with a victory 33-30.

"We got behind early in the game, but we were able to make a comeback in the second half," said Head Basketball Coach Matt Brown. "I think a lot of it was due to nerves. We played a pretty solid game. It was a good win for us."

Sophomore guard Andre (A.J.) Walker led in scoring with 10 points and pulled down a team-high six rebounds. Walker and freshman forward Colby Honeycutt tied for the lead in steals with two each. Honeycut contributed eight points, and freshman guard Tim Leavell added six.

SFCC took on Pratt Community College in their second game and emerged with a 64-59 victory.

"It was a back-and-forth game," said Brown. "We were able to get all 12 guys in the game."

Walker led in scoring with 18 points and in steals with two. Freshman guard/forward Caleb Coleman contributed 12 points. Honeycut pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Freshman guard Christian Brown dished out a team-high three assists.

SFCC took on Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa in game three of the day. SFCC fell 70-44.

"We were out of gas by the third game," said Brown. "We didn't play as well, but we were still able to play quite a few guys. Our defense struggled in the third game. Northern Oklahoma shot the ball really well."

Leavell led in scoring with nine points. Walker added eight points and dished out a team-high two assists. Sophomore guard Grant Gelon led in steals with three. Freshman guard Tyreek Scott-Grayson and Leavell pulled down four rebounds each.

In the final scrimmage, SFCC took on Panola College and fell by a score of 63-46.

"That was a back-and-forth game all the way through," said Brown.

Walker and freshman guard/forward LePear Toles tied for the lead in scoring with nine points each. Sophomore center Isaac Bassey pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and led in blocked shots with three. Walker and Bassey tied for the team lead in assists with two. Scott-Grayson led in steals with three.

"We played four really good teams at this event," said Brown. "Overall, it was a good experience. We were able to play all 12 players in some of the games. Now we go back to work and get ready for the Johnson County Jamboree."

The Johnson County Jamboree will be Sunday, Oct. 15.
