Roadrunners Participate in Second Jamboree

The Roadrunners won two of three scrimmages Oct. 18 when they participated in the Johnson County Jamboree in Overland Park, Kansas.

SFCC took on the Fort Scott Community College Greyhounds from Fort Scott, Kansas; the Neosho County Community College Panthers from Chanute, Kansas; and the Des Moines Area Community College Bears from Boone, Iowa.

SFCC played Fort Scott during its first scrimmage.

"We started the game without much energy," said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. "It took a strong comeback in the second half to come out with a 59-49 victory. We struggled with intensity and effort throughout the day. Ronnie Rousseau III almost willed us to victory in the first game."

Rousseau led three Roadrunners in double-figure scoring with 17 points. He shot six of nine from the field and four of four from the free-throw line. He also led the team in assists with three and tied William Jones and Craig McKenzie Jr. for the lead in steals with two. Joshua Bailey scored 14 points and Duante Stephens added 11. Clint Robinson pulled down a team-high six rebounds.

The Roadrunners fell to Neosho County Community College in their second scrimmage by a score of 63-53. The game featured one lead change and one tie.

"We didn't play very hard in this game," said Thomas. "Neosho carved us up on both ends of the floor, and we just couldn't seem to score."

Rousseau led SFCC in scoring with 17 points. Jones and Robinson scored eight apiece. Robinson also pulled down a team-high six rebounds and McKenzie dished out a team-high four assists.

In their final scrimmage, the Roadrunners took on Des Moines Area Community College. SFCC led 24-18 at halftime and emerged with a 49-40 victory.

"We came out with a little more energy and were able to get a lead," said Thomas. "We executed a little better and did a better job of finding the open man."

Bailey led in scoring with 17 points. McKenzie pulled down a team-high six rebounds and dished out a team-high four assists. Eric Williams registered a team-high two steals. Robinson added nine points and Stephens added eight.

The format for the scrimmages consisted of two 24-minute running clock halves. The clock only stopped in the last minute of the second half.

SFCC will travel to Quincy, Illinois, Oct. 24 for its final preseason scrimmages in the John Wood Jamboree. SFCC will take on Carl Sandburg College, John Wood Community College and Hannibal LaGrange University.

The Roadrunners will open their season at home Oct. 30 in the McDonald's Classic when they take on Link Prep at 7:30 p.m.
