Roadrunners Defeat Eagles

The 19th-ranked Roadrunners picked up their second win of the season Nov. 15 at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center. SFCC (2-5) closed out the Stone Laser Imaging Classic with a 85-65 victory over the Quakerdale Prep Eagles from New Providence, Iowa.

Quakerdale jumped out to a 12-2 lead early in the first half, helped by three deep three-point shots from Quakerdale guard Lindsay Hunter IV. Sophomore guard Dondre Alexander knocked down one of his six three-pointers to give SFCC a 15-14 advantage, their first lead of the game. SFCC made some defensive adjustments and took control the game to lead 45-33 at halftime.

"Quakerdale's Hunter made some good shots," said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. "After we got him covered, we were able to make some shots, take the lead and take control of the game."

The Roadrunners built an 83-60 lead late in the second half. The 23-point advantage was the largest held by either team in the contest.

Sophomore guard Dondre Alexander led five Roadrunners in double-figure scoring with 26 points. Freshman guard Hakeem Coney was one of three Roadrunners to contribute 11 points, along with freshman guard Joshua Bailey and freshman forward Clint Robinson. Robinson led the team in blocked shots with five. Freshman forward Selvedin Planincic just missed a double double, contributing 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds, plus four blocked shots. Alexander and freshman guard Ra'Chaun Martin tied for the team lead in steals with three. Martin also dished out a team-high eight assists. Martin and Coney made the All-Classic Team for SFCC.

"Hakeem made some progress this week," said Thomas. "He made good decisions with the ball in his hands. Ra'Chaun had zero turnovers tonight in almost 40 minutes of action with eight assists. That's the kind of play we need out of him for us to compete and beat good teams."

The Roadrunners will travel to the Indian Hills Classic in Ottumwa, Iowa, Nov.  21-22. SFCC will take on the host and nationally ranked Indian Hills Community College at 7 p.m. Friday followed by a matchup with the William Penn Junior Varsity at 4 p.m. Saturday.
