Roadrunners Go Undefeated at Johnson County

The Roadrunners participated in the Johnson County Jamboree Oct. 19 in Overland Park, Kansas. It was the team's second set of scrimmages of the preseason.

SFCC took on Seward County Community College from Kansas in its first scrimmage. The Roadrunners led 11-6 in the first half, and their five-point advantage was the largest for either team in the contest. Seward took a 24-20 advantage into halftime, but SFCC outscored Seward 23-17 to emerge with a hard-fought 43-41 victory.

"Seward County has a pretty good team and they play hard," said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. "Our guys also played hard. We weren't always in right place, but our effort was a lot better than last weekend. We made a couple of plays late in the game to help us win."

Freshman guard Joshua Bailey led SFCC in scoring with 12 points, including a pair of three-point baskets, and tied for the team lead in steals with two. Freshman guard Ra'Chaun Martin contributed nine points, tied for the team lead in assists with three and also registered two steals. Sophomore guard Dondre Alexander added six points and three assists and pulled down four rebounds. Freshman forward Clint Robinson pitched in with six points and four rebounds. Freshman forward Selvedin Planincic pulled down a team-high five rebounds.

SFCC took on Colby Community College from Kansas in the second scrimmage of the day. The Roadrunners led 41-20 at the half and picked up a 60-46 victory.

"We shot the ball extremely well in that game," said Thomas. "We were able to get out and run and get some baskets in transition."

Alexander led two Roadrunners in double-figure scoring with 20 points. Planincic contributed 14 points. Freshman guard Hakeem Coney pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and dished out a team-high five assists.

SFCC took on Labette Community College from Kansas in its final scrimmage. The Roadrunners led 31-16 at halftime, and then pushed their advantage to 53-32 in the second half to emerge with a 65-48 victory.

Alexander registered a double double with 16 points and 11 rebounds and tied for the team lead in steals with three. Coney pitched in with 11 points. Alexander, Bailey and Coney dished out three assists each.

"It was good to have some guys on the floor who had not played with us for a while," said Thomas. "A couple of our guys had only practiced twice before this weekend and they played well. We still have a long way to go, but we're improving every day."

The Roadrunners will take on Central Methodist and Missouri Baptist Oct. 22 in Fayette.
