Hawks Defeat Roadrunners

The Roadrunners dropped a 109-74 decision to the Northeast Community College Hawks from Norfolk, Nebraska, Jan. 5 in their 2015 schedule opener at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center.

SFCC (4-11) took a 22-20 lead when freshman guard Trenton Cooper knocked down a three-pointer with about  11 minutes remaining in the first half. Cooper was one of five players who made their Roadrunner debuts in the game. He was joined by freshman guards DaMario Walker, Spencer Ruckman, Borden Edgar, and Kyler Tucker. Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas was pleased with the effort of the newcomers.

"They put forth a good effort," said Thomas. "They played hard and tried to do what we asked them to do. Unfortunately, we only have seven guys. When they got tired, Northeast was able to make some runs on us. Their effort was good and their hearts were in the right place. We have to keep working and trying to improve."

Later in the first half, the Hawks went on an 11-0 run to take control of the contest. Northeast led 57-39 at halftime.

Freshman guards Joshua Bailey and Ryan Surface led three Roadrunners in double-figure scoring with 23 points each. Walker contributed 11 points, dished out a team-high five assists and registered a team-high two steals. Bailey also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
