Lady Roadrunners end first season with loss

The Lady Roadrunners soccer team (3-8-2) traveled to St. Louis Oct. 24 to play in the Region 16 tournament. The first season in the history of SFCC's women's soccer come to a close with a tough 1-0 loss to the St. Louis Community College Lady Archers.

"We played great to begin the game," said Lady Roadrunners Head Soccer Coach Eddie Horn. "We were moving the ball well and creating chances."

The score was tied at zero at halftime. St. Louis scored the game's only goal from about 30 yards out at the 47-minute, 27-second mark of the second half.

"After the goal we started pushing more players forward since it was a single elimination situation," said Horn. "Our players really hung tough and were battling for the equalizer. Maddie Davidson missed a shot from outside the box that missed the post by about six inches, and that would've tied it in the last five minutes. If you look at the big picture, from where we started the season to where we ended, it was great for our players. They became more competitive as the season went along. We showed a lot of fight in our last game."

SFCC recorded four shots in the match. Freshman goalkeeper Kylie King made 11 saves. Coach Horn sees specific areas of improvement needed for the 2017 season.

"We need to get our number of players up to around 25 so we can have competitive practices and scrimmage more," said Horn. "We are way ahead of where we were last year at this time when there wasn't even a team. There's a lot of interest in the program, and I'm excited about 2017. We finished tied for third place in Region 16 in our first season. If we have a good recruiting class, we will be in the mix next season."
