Lady Roadrunners defeat Highland Community College

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners got the second semester off to a good start with a 68-55 home victory over Highland Community College (Kansas) Saturday night, Jan. 6.

SFCC (13-1) jumped out to an early 9-0 lead with about seven minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Highland fought back to take a 15-14 lead. SFCC took control of the game, outscoring Highland 16-8 in the second quarter to lead 30-23 at halftime. SFCC took a 53-40 lead at the end of three quarters and made the plays in the final quarter to secure the victory in the first contest after the holiday break.

"We looked really good and at times, we looked very sloppy," said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Nicole Collier. "I thought we had a strong start, but we struggled to keep our foot on throttle. We were able to work out some kinks, but we had too many turnovers. I thought Meghan Campise came in and gave us some great minutes. I thought La'Tommas Johnson-Nash was very sharp. Jaida Shipp made a big catch at the end for us on a ball that she didn't see coming. Nakayla Green really makes us go. I was happy with the amount of players that we were able to get in the game. I think we were excited to play against someone else instead of each other tonight."

Shipp registered a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the team in both categories. Johnson-Nash contributed 12 points, recorded a team-high four steals, and tied for the team lead in assists with Green with three each. Green added 11 points in the game.
