Lady Roadrunners win over MVC, split at McDonald’s Classic

Nov. 2 - Missouri Valley College Junior Varsity at Sedalia

The Lady Roadrunners opened their 2022-2023 campaign with a 79-70 victory over Missouri Valley College at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center.

SFCC led 20-18 at the end of the first quarter and 40-35 at halftime and led the entire game. However, Missouri Valley refused to go away, forcing the Lady Roadrunners to make plays down the stretch.10.

Freshman forward Aiyanna Tanksley of Detriot, Michigan, registered a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Biance Stocks of Lake of the Ozarks added 13 points. Freshman guard Perryauna Youmans of Palmetto, Florida, scored 10 points and grabbed a team-high three. Sophomore Autumn Wallace of Climax Spring pulled down 10 rebounds and tied for the team lead in assists with freshman guard Kylee Ash of Tuscumbia at five.

"We are still ironing out the kinks and figuring out who can do what," said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Nicole Collier. "We're still trying to figure each other out on the defensive end of the floor. There are a lot of teachable moments from tonight. It was good for us to get some time on the floor against another team. We had 17 turnovers in the first half. We were careless with the ball and made some poor decisions. We did a much better job of taking care of the ball and controlling the offense in the second half. I thought we did a better job of not giving up as many offensive rebounds in the second half."

Nov. 4 - Southeastern Community College at Sedalia

The Lady Roadrunners opened in the McDonald's Classic with an 89-29 victory over Southeastern Community College at the Davis Multipurpose Center.

SFCC set the tone early holding Southeastern to only six points in the opening quarter. The Lady Roadrunners held Southeastern to single digits in three of the four quarters.

"Our primary focus in this game was our defense," said Collier. "We wanted to be very aggressive with our on-ball defense and be assignment correct in our ball screen defense. We also wanted to force tough catches. I felt like the girls did a nice job of that the entire game. I liked our energy on the defensive end that created some offense for us."

As a team, the Lady Roadrunners out rebounded Southeastern 62-31. Tanksley recorded another double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore forward Quincenia Jackson of Decatur, Illinois, added 16 points. Freshman Jaida Shipp of Edmond, Oklahoma, had a double-double with 16 points, a team-high 14 rebounds and led in blocked shots with two. Youmans scored 15 points, made a team-high five assists and tied with Stocks for the team lead in steals with three.

Nov. 5 - Kirkwood Community College at Sedalia

SFCC (2-1) closed the McDonald's Classic with a 64-49 loss to Kirkwood Community College, the top-ranked team in NJCAA Division II Women's Basketball at the Davis Multipurpose Center.

The Kirkwood Eagles led 32-25 at halftime and outscored the Lady Roadrunners by 10 points in the third quarter.

"I think fatigue was an issue going into the second half," said Collier. "We have to figure out a way to come out just as focused and engaged in the second half as we do to start the game. Getting more games under our belt will help with that. Tonight, I thought we struggled to put our post players in a position to be successful.

Tanksley and sophomore guard Kayla Dooley of Norbourne tied for the team lead in scoring with nine points each. Tanksley pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Stocks dished out a team-high five assists. Jackson led the team in steals with two.
