Lady Roadrunners win on sophomore night

Jan. 26 Moberly Area Community College at Moberly

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners dropped a 95-47 Region 16 and conference game to the ninth-ranked Moberly Area Community College Lady Greyhounds in Moberly, Missouri on Wednesday night, Jan. 26.

Moberly went on a 10-0 run to lead in the first quarter 24-14. The Lady Greyhounds turned up their defensive pressure to take control of the contest. Moberly led 46-27 at halftime.

"We were outworked, but it wasn't because of lack of effort from our team," said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Nicole Collier. "Moberly is just bigger, faster, and stronger. We struggled to keep them in front of us on defense. We had 17 turnovers at halftime, which is always disappointing, because that is within our control. We lost sight of our defensive principles."

Freshman forward Autumn Wallace, sophomore guard Grace Goodwin, and freshman guard Paige Spencer all tied for the team lead in scoring with 11 points. Wallace pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds. Goodwin also dished out a team-high three assists. Sophomore forward Tieriney Echols led the team in steals with three.

Jan. 29 Crowder College at Sedalia

SFCC (8-11, 4-6 in Region 16) picked up an 89-81 victory over Crowder College inside the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center on Saturday, Jan. 29. The game was part of the Region 16 schedule for both teams. The Lady Roadrunners honored their sophomores at halftime of the men's game.

The Lady Roadrunners scored the first 12 points in the game to jump out to an early advantage. Crowder cut the SFCC advantage to 41-38 at halftime. Crowder took a 64-62 lead at the end of three quarters. The Lady Roadrunners had the answers in the final quarter outscoring Crowder by 10 points to secure the victory and snap a three-game losing streak.

Freshman forward Quincenia Jackson posted another double-double by going 14 of 14 from the field to score a career-high 34 points and 14 rebounds to lead the team in both categories. Goodwin contributed a career-high 23 points and one blocked shot. Freshman guard Olivia Dooley chipped in with 10 points. Freshman guard Kayla Dooley registered a team-high six assists and two steals.

"I thought we struggled a little bit in the second and third quarters," said Collier. "We knew that Crowder was not going to go away. In the last five minutes of the game, I felt like our group was just able to grind it out. We buckled down and made plays and didn't give up easy looks. We got great offensive contributions from Quincenia and Grace tonight. We have to get better at controlling our turnovers. That game was a must-have for both programs. Every region game is critical for seeding purposes."
