Lady Roadrunners can’t overcome slow start

The State Fair Community College Lady Roadrunners fell to Labette Community College 75-70 in the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center on Wednesday night, Dec. 8. SFCC (6-8) trailed 22-10 at the end of one quarter and 52-31 at halftime.

"We gave up 52 points and struggled to guard anyone in the first half," said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Nicole Collier. "There was no communication on the floor."

SFCC refused to go away quietly though, outscoring Labette 24-7 in third quarter and trimming the deficit to four points at 59-55 at the end of three quarters. Labette made the plays down the stretch in the final quarter to emerge with the victory.

"In the third quarter, we were able to pick up our communication, which brought energy to our team," said Collier. "It all started with getting stops on the defensive end."

Freshman forward Quincenia Jackson led the team with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman forward Autumn Wallace added 12 points and tied for the team lead in steals with two. Freshman guard Olivia Dooley scored 11 points. Sophomore guard Eliyah Howard recorded a team-high five assists and tied for the team lead in steals with two. Jackson also had two steals along with freshman guard Kayla Dooley.

"We are still learning about each other," said Collier. "I think there's still a lot of opportunity for growth in our team in the second half of the season. We have some kids on the bench that I need to get into the mix. We will reset over Christmas break and put kids in a lot of different situations."
