Lady Roadrunners split at Moberly Classic

Nov. 23 - North Central Missouri College at Sedalia

The SFCC Lady Roadrunners picked up a hard-fought 73-66 victory over North Central Missouri College, the 13th ranked team in the NJCAA Division II Women's Basketball Poll on Tuesday night, Nov. 23, at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center. The game featured seven ties and two lead changes.

SFCC led 22-17 at the end of the first quarter. North Central held the Lady Roadrunners to only seven points in the second quarter to take a 39-29 lead into halftime. The Lady Roadrunners took back the momentum to take a 52-47 lead. SFCC made just enough plays in the final minutes to pick up the victory.

"We had an outstanding first quarter," said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Nicole Collier. "I thought we were really able to control the tempo of the game. We were able to get into several of our offensive sets. In the second quarter, we were able to get to our first defensive rotation, but we missed the second, which allowed easy passes and baskets for North Central. I thought we did a good job getting out in the passing lanes in the third quarter. We made North Central feel a little bit more ball pressure, and they could not reverse the ball as easily. We were able to get in the gaps and guard as a team. I thought our post players did a good job of rotating over and staying high and making them finish over the top of us. North Central is a very fundamentally sound team that is very well coached."

Freshman forward Quincenia Jackson registered a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds, leading the team in both categories. Jackson also had a team-high two blocked shots. Sophomore guard Grace Goodwin contributed 12 points and a team-high eight assists. Goodwin also tied for the team lead in steals with freshman guard Kayla Dooley with three each. Sophomore forward Tieriney Echols pitched in with 10 points.

Nov. 26 - Arkansas State University Mid-South at Moberly

The Lady Roadrunners fell by a score of 74-56 to Arkansas State University Mid-South, the 11th ranked team in the NJCAA Division II Women's Basketball Poll, in the opening round of the Moberly Classic on Friday, Nov. 26.

The Lady Roadrunners led in the first quarter 14-13. ASU-Mid-South outscored the Lady Roadrunners 23-11 in the second quarter to take a lead into halftime. SFCC outscored ASU-Mid-South 23-21 in the third quarter, but it wasn't enough.

Freshman forward Autumn Wallace registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore post Jakyah Amous also contributed 12 points. Goodwin dished out a team-high six assists. Freshman guard Paige Spencer led the team in steals with three.

"Turnovers have been an issue for us the whole weekend," said Collier. "We came out very sluggish. We just didn't have a lot of energy. We had opportunities take over the game; we just played very flat."

Nov. 27 Rock Valley College at Moberly

On Saturday, Nov. 27, SFCC (5-5) took on Rock Valley College, the second ranked team in the NJCAA Division III Women's Basketball Poll, picking up a 74-46 victory. The victory closed out the Lady Roadrunners portion of the Moberly Classic.

SFCC jumped out to a 20-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.

"We needed to come out and really get after them and create some havoc on the defensive end," said Collier. "I thought them getting in foul trouble early really slowed the pace of the game down. This was a much-needed win for us."

Jackson led SFCC in scoring with 18 points and registered a team-high two blocked shots. Freshman guard Olivia Dooley added 13 points. Wallace pulled down a team-high 16 rebounds. Freshman guard Kaitlyn Everts dished out a team-high three assists.
