Shooting sports has successful weekend at the Missouri Valley Viking Invitational

The shooting sports team earned team and individual honors at the Missouri Valley College Viking Invitational at the Prairie Grove Shooting Sports Complex in Columbia on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.

SFCC shot three disciplines in the event, including 100 American Trap, 100 American Skeet and 100 Sporting Clays. SFCC competed as the only community college at the event against four-year institutions.

Head coach Sarah Manuel was pleased with her team's performance at the event.

"Anthony Walls of Ashland shot his first 100 out of 100 in American Skeet; that is a pretty big feat, but doing it at an Invitational makes it even more special," said Manuel. "I am very proud of him for keeping his head down and concentrating. Hunter Snow from Columbia and Arthur Sims Jr. from Sedalia shot their first 50 straight in American Trap."

Wayland McKenzie of Boonville took first place individually in Sporting Clays with a score of 85. Walls won the American Skeet.

"Our teams also did very well at the event," Manuel said. The top five in Sporting Clays consisted of Wayland McKenzie, Connor Hess of California, Missouri, Hunter Snow, Anthony Walls, and Daniel Younger-Loesing of Hughesville, who as a team took first in Sporting Clays with 389. SFCC also took first place in American Skeet with Anthony Walls, Wayland McKenzie, Connor Hess, Hunter Snow, and Arthur Sims Jr, with a 472 out of 500. The team placed second in American Trap, consisting of Wayland McKenzie, Anthony Walls, Ben Engemann, Arthur Sims Jr, and Hunter Snow with a 472 out of 500. SFCC also captured the High Overall team with 1322 birds, and Wayland McKenzie won the High Overall individual with a 95 in trap, 98 in skeet, and an 85 in Sporting Clays, for a total of 278. Anthony Walls finished second in the High Overall individual with a 269, 95 in trap, 100 in skeet, and 74 in Sporting Clays.

"As a coach, I'm very excited to see how we have begun the season. We have meshed well as a team, and our performance at this event was exciting," said Manuel. "I'm more excited to see how we can grow."

SFCC will return to action at the ACUI SCTP 2023 Collegiate Fall Central Midwest Conference Championship on Oct. 13-15 in Sparta, Illinois.
