Roadrunners continue season with a victory and a draw

Sept. 29 Evangel University at Springfield

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Roadrunners picked up a 2-1 victory over Evangel University on Monday, Sept. 26 in Springfield.

SFCC opened the scoring with a goal off a penalty kick from freshman Hugo Sanchez in the seventh minute. Evangel responded with a goal 10 minutes later to tie the game. SFCC would score what would prove to be the game-winning goal in the 33rd minute off a counterattack, when freshman forward Bruno Saucedo beat his man and made a pass into the middle to freshman Caleb Sandgren for the score.

"It was good game for our guys," said Roadrunners Head Coach Jaime Beltran. "It was about as good of a performance as you can have in a game that you only end up winning by one goal. Evangel had a flurry in the last five minutes of the game where they pressured our goal a little bit."

SFCC recorded 16 shots as a team in the game, 11 of which were on target. Sophomore Kenzo Florio took a team-high five shots, three of which were on target. Sanchez registered four shots, three of which were on goal.

SFCC played all three goalkeepers in the contest. Freshman AJ Young got the start and allowed the only goal of the contest. Sophomore goalkeeper Wesley Morrison and Breno Prado recorded one save each. All three goalkeepers played about 30 minutes.

Sept. 29 Missouri Valley College at Sedalia

SFCC (3-6-2) battled to a 0-0 draw with Missouri Valley College at the Fred E. Davis Sports Complex on Thursday, Sept. 29 in Sedalia.

Both teams had opportunities, but neither could find the back of the net.

As a team, SFCC recorded eight shots, five of which were on target. Sanchez, freshman Rodrigo Prieto, freshman Simone Vitale all had two shots.

Morrison got the start in the net for SFCC and recorded four saves.

"I think our guys played well in spurts," said Beltran. "Our defense was extremely solid. We got Oliver Bell back from an injury, which made a big difference in the back line. We are still going through some growing pains in the midfield but overall, they played well. We created some chances to score but, we just have to finish them. Lucas Martin also came back from injury today, he also played well. I don't have a whole lot to be angry about, but we also don't have a lot to celebrate."
