SFCC Esports looking to build on successful fall season

The SFCC Esports team has been busy preparing for the upcoming spring season. Head Coach Jacob Coleman likes what he has seen from his team so far in practice.

"Practices have been great," said Coleman. "We finished strong in the fall, but we knew we had some work ahead of us. We wanted to get off to a strong start next week when our season begins and see if we can do better than we did last semester."

SFCC will be participating in FIFA, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Overwatch 2, Mario Kart, Call of Duty: Warzone, Rocket League and Rainbow Six Siege.

Coach Coleman has been impressed with his Rocket League team so far in practice.

"Last semester, we ended up getting fourth place in the playoffs," said Coleman. "We had a pretty average regular season. I tasked them to try and push themselves as hard as they could in the off-season and during Christmas break. They came back from Christmas break three ranks higher than when they left. They really jumped up a lot in their skill and their consistency."

"Everyone else is also doing well," said Coleman. "I've been blessed with a really good group of kids, and I've also been blessed with some really talented individuals. Trenton Hardy never ceases to amaze me. He pushes himself a lot. He is a great student academically with a 4.0 GPA. He does a lot for our program and is very dedicated and involved around campus."

Coach Coleman expects leadership to come from a variety of different places this semester.

"I think leadership will be dependent on the game title," said Coleman. "I believe for Overwatch 2 leadership will come from Trenton Hardy. In Rainbow Six Siege we are going to lean a lot on Drake Miller to help lead the team."

Coach Coleman has some goals that he would like to see the team accomplish this season.

"The semester, as much as we want to have some great wins in Esports," said Coleman. "Our goal is to make sure that we make it to the playoffs in every title that we compete in. The secondary goal for that is to try to at least advance to semifinals. It would be phenomenal if we could win a National Championship. However most importantly, we really want to focus on our academics this semester. We want to raise our grade point average as a program. We are going to do consistent grade checks, study halls and utilize resources available on campus to help us improve our academic performance."

"We are very excited and looking forward to the season," said Coleman. "Hopefully, we can do better than we did last semester, which will be a challenge because I think we did pretty well last semester. I think we can continue to improve our performance."
