Roadrunners win three of four to open season

February 9 Gadsden State Community College in Gadsden, Alabama at Gadsden City High School

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Roadrunners opened their 2024 campaign with a doubleheader sweep, 16-4 in a five-inning victory in game one and a 11-3 win in game two over Gadsden State Community College at Gadsden City High School on Friday, February 9.

In game one, freshman outfielder/first baseman Dayne Wimberly registered three hits, including a triple and a home run, with five RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore middle infielder Ryan Retone also had three hits, including a home run, three runs scored and two RBIs. Sophomore first baseman/third baseman Carter Jenkins hit a pair of home runs, drove in three runs, and scored twice. Freshman first baseman Tripp Johns hit a pair of home runs, scored twice, and drove in two runs. Freshman middle infielder Sam Paule and freshman catcher Beck Jones also hit home runs and scored twice each. Sophomore outfielder Logan Miller hit a double and scored twice. As a team, SFCC registered 15 hits and eight home runs.

Sophomore pitcher Jaden Kolb got the start for SFCC. In two innings, Kolb gave up three runs on three hits and struck out four. Sophomore pitcher Tait Robertson picked up the win in relief. Robertson (1-0) pitched three innings, gave up one run on two hits, and struck out two.

In game two, Miller led the SFCC offense with three hits, two runs scored and a stolen base. Wimberly recorded a double and a home run, three runs scored and two RBIs. Jenkins had a pair of hits, including a double, two RBIs and scored a run. Sophomore outfielder Devyn Wright added a pair of hits and two RBIs. Freshman middle infielder/outfielder Grant Lambeth doubled and scored a pair of runs. Paule also scored twice.

Freshman pitcher Chase Schnieders got the start on the mound for SFCC in game two. In four innings, Schnieders gave up two runs, one earned on four hits and struck out three. Redshirt freshman Dawson Torpey (1-0) pitched three innings, allowed one hit, walked one and struck out seven to pick up the victory in relief.

February 10 Gadsden State Community College in Gadsden, Alabama at Gadsden City High School

SFCC (3-1) split a doubleheader against Gadsden State Community College, losing the opening game 13-7 before bouncing back to win game two 14-9 at Gadsden City High School on Saturday, February 10.

In game one, sophomore pitcher/third baseman Jayden Little had two hits, including a double and two RBIs. Sophomore outfielder Sam Russo had two hits, including a home run and two RBIs. Paule registered two hits. Retone doubled and drove in two runs. Wimberly scored twice.

Sophomore pitcher Carter DeGondea got the start on the mound for SFCC. DeGondea pitched 3 2/3 innings, gave up three runs on four hits and struck out six. Little (0-1) picked up the loss in relief. Little pitched two-thirds of an inning, gave up five unearned runs on one hit and struck out one.

In game two, Russo stayed hot with a double, a home run, six RBIs and two runs scored. Miller also hit a home run and drove in four. Little hit a home run and drove in three runs. Paule had two hits, including a double and scored twice. Retone doubled and scored two runs. Wright had a pair of hits, including a double and two runs scored. As a team, SFCC had 11 hits and drew 16 walks in the game.

Sophomore pitcher Keith Piepmeier got the start for SFCC and pitched one inning and gave up four runs on four hits. Freshman pitcher Chade Noble (1-0) picked up the win in relief. Noble pitched one inning, gave up one hit and struck out one.
