Roadrunners baseball ends season in sub-regional

May 1 Mineral Area College at Park Hills

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) baseball team split a pair of Region 16 makeup games at Mineral Area College. SFCC dropped a hard-fought game one 9-8, before bouncing back to take game two 10-8 in Park Hills on Monday, May 1.

In game one, freshman outfielder Sam Russo led the SFCC offense with three hits, an RBI, and two runs scored. Sophomore infielder Conlan Downey doubled, scored three times, and walked twice. Freshman utility player Carter Jenkins doubled and scored a run. Sophomore infielder Adam Webb also had a double and drove in a run. Freshman infielder Calen Kruger doubled and scored a run. Freshman outfielder Devyn Wright drove in two runs. Freshman infielder Kaden McBratney added two RBIs. Freshman outfielder Logan Miller and sophomore catcher Benit Thacker drove in a run each.

Sophomore pitcher Zach Buschschulte got the start for SFCC and gave up six runs (five earned) on six hits, struck out two, and walked one in three innings. Freshman pitcher Andrew Brakensiek came out of the bullpen for SFCC and gave up three runs on three hits, struck out one, and walked one in 3 2/3 innings.

In game two, the SFCC offense produced 10 runs on 17 hits. Jenkins led SFCC with four hits, including a double and an RBI. Kruger hit a pair of home runs, scored twice, and registered three RBIs. Sophomore catcher/second baseman Yeoncheol Choi produced three hits, including a home run and a double, scored twice, and drove in two runs. Miller had two hits and an RBI. Freshman utility player Ryan Retone had two hits, including a double, two runs scored, and an RBI.

SFCC freshman pitcher Keith Piepmeier got the start and gave up five runs, (three earned runs) on six hits, walked three, and struck out three in four innings. Sophomore pitcher Garrett Dotson pitched one inning, gave up three runs (two earned runs) on one hit, and walked two. Freshman pitcher/infielder Brock Steggall pitched one inning, gave up one hit, and struck out one. Sophomore pitcher Jack Lawton pitched three innings, gave up two hits, walked three, and struck out three.

May 6 Jefferson College at Hillsboro

SFCC (18-33) ended its 2023 campaign with a pair of losses 10-0 in five innings, and 10-5 to Jefferson College in the Region 16 sub-regional on Saturday, May 6 in Hillsboro.

In game one, the Roadrunners offense was held to only one hit from Thacker.

SFCC sophomore pitcher Chase Carson got the start and gave up eight runs (five earned runs) on six hits, struck out six, and walked five in three innings. Steggall came out of the bullpen and gave up one run on one hit, struck out one, and walked one in 1 1/3 innings,.

In game two, Miller had a pair of hits, including a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Freshman outfielder John Greenwood hit a home run, drove in a run, and scored a run. Wright had a hit and two RBIs. Choi recorded a double. Jenkins contributed a hit, along with Webb. Retone had a hit and a run scored in the contest. Thacker and Downey scored a run each.

Buschschulte got the start for SFCC. Buschschulte pitched six innings, gave up seven runs (six earned runs) on five hits, struck out seven, and walked three. Sophomore pitcher Christian Whiting pitched one inning and walked two. Brakensiek pitched two-thirds of an inning, gave up three runs on two hits, walked one, and struck out one. Dotson pitched one-third of an inning and gave up a hit.
