Baseball opens NJCAA Region 16 schedule

March 7 - Moberly Area Community College at Sedalia

The Roadrunners baseball team defeated the Moberly Area Community College Greyhounds 10-8 at Liberty Park Stadium-Dey Field.

Freshman outfielder Sam Russo led the SFCC offensive attack with three hits, three runs batted in and a run scored. Freshman outfielder Devyn Wright had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI. Freshman infielder Elijah Cheaney had two hits, three RBI and a run scored. Freshmen infielders Calen Kruger and Kaden McBratney scored twice. Freshman outfielder John Greenwood registered a triple and a run batted in. Freshman outfielder Logan Miller drove in a run.

Freshman pitcher Conner Fletcher started on the mound for SFCC. He pitched four innings, allowing four hits, one run, and struck out five. Sophomore Austin Droege pitched one-third of an inning, gave up three runs and walked two. Freshman Daweson Torpey pitched two-thirds of an inning, gave up two runs on one hit, and struck out one. Sophomore Jack Lawton pitched the final four innings and gave up two runs on three hits, struck out four and walked two. Lawton earned the win in relief.

March 10 - St. Louis Community College at Sedalia

SFCC split a doubleheader against St. Louis Community College to open Region 16 play. SFCC dropped game one 6-0 before bouncing back to win game two 8-5 at Liberty Park Stadium-Dey Field.

In game one, the SFCC offense was held to just five hits, including a double from freshman utility player Carter Jenkins. McBratney registered a pair of hits. Miller had a hit and stole a base. Kruger had a hit.

Freshman Andrew Brakensiek got the start on the mound for SFCC. Brakensiek pitched 2 2/3 innings, gave up three runs on three hits and walked two. Freshman Brock Steggall came out of the bullpen for the Roadrunners, pitched 2 1/3 innings, gave up three runs (two earned runs) on two hits, struck out three and walked one. Freshman Brandon Hull pitched the final two innings for SFCC. Hull walked one and struck out two.

In game two, McBratney had a pair of hits and two runs scored. Greenwood had a home run and a double, scored a pair of runs, and drove in one. Sophomore infielder Adam Webb hit a home run and drove in two runs. Wright had two hits, a stolen base and drove in a run. Miller had two hits, a run scored and an RBI.

Freshman Keith Piepmeier got the start on the mound for SFCC. Piepmeier pitched six innings, gave up four runs on five hits and struck out eight. Sophomore Christian Whiting pitched the final three innings, gave up one run on two hits and struck out seven.

March 12 - St. Louis Community College at St. Louis

SFCC (8-12, 2-2 in Region 16) split a doubleheader against St. Louis Community College winning the opening game 12-2 and falling in the second game 14-6. The games were part of the Region 16 schedule.

In game one,  Jenkins led the SFCC offensive attack with three hits, three runs scored and two RBI. Webb had two hits, including a double, three RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore infielder Conlan Downey had two hits, including a double, and two RBI. Wright hit a home run. Greenwood had a triple and an RBI. McBratney had a double in game one. As a team, the SFCC offense put together 14 hits.

Sophomore Zach Buschschulte went the distance on the mound for SFCC. He gave up two hits, two runs (one earned), walked three, and struck out four.

In game two, SFCC was limited to only six hits as a team. Miller had two hits, scored a run and drove in a run. Webb had two hits, including a triple, and scored twice. Greenwood hit a home run.  Jenkins and McBratney drove in a run each in the game.

Lawton got the start on the mound for SFCC. He pitched two innings, gave up three runs on three hits and struck out two. Coming out of the bullpen, Torpey pitched 1 1/3 innings, gave up two runs on one hit and struck out three. Freshman Jaden Kolb pitched1 1/3 innings and gave up five runs (three earned) on two hits. Freshman Jacob House finished the game for SFCC. He gave up four runs (three earned) on two hits, walked three and struck out four.
