GRINNELL, Iowa – Members of the State Fair Community College track and field team competed at the Darren Young Classic on Feb. 14-15, hosted by Grinnell College. The Roadrunners and Lady Roadrunners combined for nine top-eight finishes at the event.
Freshman Journey Sander of Cairo placed second in the women's triple jump with a mark of 10.12 meters. She also set college bests in two other events, finishing sixth in the high jump at 1.44 meters and seventh in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.48.
Freshman Bethany Slovensky of New Florence finished fourth in the women's 60-meter hurdles with a college-best time of 9.95. She also placed seventh in the long jump with another personal best of 4.80 meters.
Freshman Amparo Payne of Hermitage secured fifth in the women's pole vault with a mark of 2.50 meters.
On the men's side, sophomore Jasper DeGraffenreid of Eldon earned third place in the shot put with a throw of 14.04 meters.
Freshman Zack Cross of Newtown placed seventh in the men's 400 meters with a time of 52.74.
Freshman Bennett Mantooth of Hermitage took eighth in the men's pole vault, setting a college best at 3.09 meters.
"The meet spanned two days, with the mile and 5,000 meters on Friday and most of the running and field events on Saturday," said SFCC head coach Kellin Loch. "We only had one athlete compete Friday, Emma Rinaldi of Belton, who set a personal record in the mile. This meet was particularly nice because the competition level allowed us to be competitive."
Loch highlighted freshman Claire Nichols of Charleston, who improved her weight throw personal record by a meter and broke the school record in the event.
"This weekend marked our second-to-last meet of the indoor season," Loch said. "Now, we're looking ahead to our final in-season meet next week in Illinois. It's crunch time for those trying to hit national qualifying marks, and we're excited to see what we can do."
SFCC will compete in its final regular-season indoor meet next week.
