Lady Roadrunners fall in battle of nationally ranked teams

Sept. 8 Metropolitan Community College at Independence, Missouri

The 19th ranked State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners shutout Metropolitan Community College 3-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 8 in Independence, Missouri. The victory was the fifth in a row for SFCC to open the season.

Freshman forward Sabra Moon registered a hat trick for the Lady Roadrunners with five shots (four on goal) and three goals. Moon opened the scoring in the 44th minute with an assist from freshman forward Carly Roberts. Moon scored again in the 71st minute off an assist from sophomore midfielder Skyler Sweezor. Moon finished the afternoon scoring off a set piece in the 77th minute.

"Sabra took an amazing free kick from outside the box," said Lady Roadrunners Soccer Head Coach Jaime Beltran. "The ball hit the crossbar, bounced down and back into the top of the net. It was a very powerful shot. This was probably our most complete game of the season so far."

Freshman goalkeeper Savannah Romero recorded the shutout in goal for SFCC. Romero made eight saves in the match.

 

Sept. 11 St. Charles Community College at the Fred E. Davis Sports Complex

SFCC and St. Charles Community College played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday, Sept. 11 at the Fred E. Davis Sports Complex.

St. Charles got on the scoreboard first with a goal with 39 minutes remaining in the opening half. St. Charles took that advantage into halftime. SFCC tied the match with 38 minutes remaining with a goal from freshman midfielder Andrea Ramirez off an assist from freshman Briscia Zuniga.

Both defenses controlled the game through the remainder of the second half and overtimes,. SFCC drew a penalty kick in the final minute of double overtime off a nice run that resulted in a foul in the box on St. Charles. The St. Charles goalkeeper made the save on the penalty kick with just seconds remaining and the game ended in a draw.

Freshman goalkeeper Maddi Bradbury and Romero both saw time in the net for SFCC. Bradbury made one save. Romero made two saves.

"This was a tie that felt like a loss," said Beltran. "We did not play well. It was a bad day."

 

Sept. 12 Southwestern Illinois College at the Fred E. Davis Sports Complex

SFCC (5-1-1) dropped a 3-1 match to eighth-ranked Southwestern Illinois College on Sunday, Sept. 12 at the Fred E. Davis Sports Complex. The loss was the first of the season for the Lady Roadrunners.

Southwestern Illinois opened the scoring with 14 minutes and 13 seconds remaining the opening half to take 1-0 advantage into halftime.

Freshman midfielder Ally Woolery tied the match with a shot from about 40 yards out with less than seven minutes gone in the second half.

Southwestern Illinois took another lead with about 23 minutes remaining in the match. Southwestern Illinois added the final goal of the match with about 11 minutes remaining to provide the winning margin.

Romero got the start in goal for the Lady Roadrunners.

"Southwestern Illinois is a very good team," said Beltran. "We defended the counterattack well, but they had a little bit more than we did."
