The 20th ranked (NJCAA Division II Women's Soccer preseason poll) State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners (1-0) picked up a 3-1 season opening victory over Scott Community College in Bettendorf, Iowa on Saturday, August 21.
Midfielder Andrea Ramirez picked up the first goal for SFCC in the fourth minute. Forward Sabra Moon of Sedalia extended the advantage with a goal in the 39th minute with an assist from midfielder Skyler Sweezor. SFCC took the two-goal advantage into the locker room.
Scott Community College opened the scoring in the second half. Midfielder Jianiva Flores finished the scoring with a goal in the 66th minute, courtesy of another assist from Sweezor.
Goalkeeper Savannah Romero got the start in goal for SFCC and played the entire match.
Lady Roadrunners Soccer Head Coach Jaime Beltran was pleased with what he saw from his team in the opening match.
"Our team played well," said Beltran. "We got off to a really good start. Andrea Ramirez scored the first goal off a beautiful shot from outside the box and it allowed us to relax a little bit. We had some first game jitters with some girls were playing in new positions. We were able to move the ball well. It was good to see the whole team contribute to a win. It was a very positive start to the season."
