Women’s Soccer Recap Sept.5-9

Sept. 5 Jefferson College at Sedalia

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners hosted the Jefferson College Lady Vikings from Hillsboro on Wednesday, Sept. 5 in the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference opener for SFCC. The Lady Roadrunners picked up their first win of the season by a score of 3-0.

"I was very happy that the girls were able to get a win," said SFCC Soccer Head Coach Jaime Beltran. "We didn't get a lot of opportunities, but at the same time, we did not take advantage of all of our opportunities."

SFCC got on scoreboard with a goal from freshman midfielder Ria Kessell of Jefferson City in the ninth minute of the match, off of a pass from sophomore midfielder Raleigh Johns of Osage Beach. After a lightning delay, State Fair added to their lead with a goal from sophomore forward Bianca Meza of El Paso, Texas with less than five minutes remaining in the opening half, courtesy of a pass from freshman midfielder Hailie Acton of Fulton. Freshman forward Alys Beadle of England added the final goal of the contest when she scored on a breakaway opportunity with 11 seconds remaining in the opening half with an assist from Johns.

"Jefferson was playing in a very defensive shell," said Beltran. "We need to do a better job of finding feet and opening up the defense. After our second goal, they started to push forward a little bit, which opened up more space and allowed us to get a couple more chances including the third goal."

The second lightning delay forced the officials to call the game with 12 minutes 25 seconds remaining in the contest.

Sophomore defender Karina Esquivel of Jefferson City led SFCC in shots with four. Acton and Meza registered three shots apiece.

Freshman goalkeeper Samantha Curphey of Kansas City got the start in the net for State Fair. She played the first half recording one save. Fellow freshman goalkeeper Atziry Plascencia of El Paso, Texas played the remainder the contest and recorded one save.

Sept. 9 John Wood Community College at Quincy, Illinois

SFCC (2-4, 1-0 in the MCCAC) traveled to Quincy, Illinois on Sunday, Sept. 9 to take on John Wood Community College and picked up a record-setting 7-0 victory in the match.

The seven goals scored are the most scored in a single match in program history by the Lady Roadrunners. This is also the first time in program history that the Lady Roadrunners have recorded back to back shutouts and two victories in a row.

The scoring started in the 20th minute when sophomore forward Jessica Coble of Sedalia found the back of the net off a pass from Johns. SFCC led 1-0 at halftime.

"They definitely came out ready to play after halftime," said Beltran. "They listened to all the adjustments that we wanted to make, for the first time they played dominating soccer against another team. It was good to see."

Johns scored in the 48th minute off of a pass from freshman midfielder Diana Martinez of Bolivia. Acton got on the scoreboard about six minutes later off a pass from sophomore defender Kiara Williams of Sedalia.

Curphey scored as a field player in the 67th minute off of a pass from Acton.

Esquivel scored in the 74th minute. Freshman defender Jorri Toone of Kansas City scored in the 83rd minute. Williams finished the scoring in the 86th minute.

The Lady Roadrunners had 36 shots as a team, 20 of them were on goal. Curphey and Plascencia once again split time in the net for SFCC. They recorded one save each.
