Jan. 22: SFCC vs. Moberly Area Community College
The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners edged the Moberly Area Community College Lady Greyhounds 58-55 in a Region 16 clash on Jan. 22 in Sedalia. The back-and-forth game featured four lead changes and five ties.
SFCC opened with a 9-0 run in the first five minutes, their largest lead.
"I thought we just kept it simple," said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Nicole Collier. "We took what they gave us. We attacked the basket. They let us pass through the zone and then we relaxed. It was a dogfight from there."
Moberly responded with a 19-5 run, ending the first quarter up 19-14. SFCC regained a 29-28 halftime lead, but Moberly outscored SFCC 14-10 in the third, taking a 42-39 advantage into the final quarter.
In the fourth, key three-pointers—including a clutch shot by freshman guard Sophia Edwin of Killeen, Texas—helped SFCC secure a narrow lead. Sophomore forward Kayla Sullivan's free throws and defensive plays were pivotal in maintaining the advantage. Moberly came close, but missed late free throws allowed SFCC to seal the win.
"Those three-point shots changed the momentum of the game," said Collier "We got some stops at the other end. I thought Kayla (Sullivan) was huge tonight. She owned the boards and defended the block. She had some big blocks late in the game. We are still searching for consistency as a team. We would like to get to the point we are all playing at a high level together."
Sullivan, from St. Louis, led with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Maddy Queathem of Montgomery County added 10 points, while freshman forward Ellie Buscher of St. Louis tied Sullivan with three assists. Sophomore guard Madison Johnson of Harrisonville had two steals, and Buscher blocked two shots.
