The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners opened the second semester with a 110-29 victory over Kennedy-King College inside the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 4.
The Lady Roadrunners (14-1) jumped out to an early 6-2 lead with less than eight minutes remaining in the opening quarter with all six points courtesy of freshman guard Malia Rodgers. Rodgers knocked down a half-court shot at the buzzer to give SFCC a 24-11 lead to end the opening quarter.
SFCC led 53-18 at halftime and used a combination of up-tempo offense and stifling defense to secure the victory. The 29 points allowed by SFCC was one of the best defensive performances since the 1978-1979 season, when the team allowed eight and 14 points in a pair of victories against Cottey College.
"Our transition offense was really good today," said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Nicole Collier. "I thought we had some excellent passing. We shared the ball well. We still have work to do but overall, I'm happy with our performance. Defensively, I think we can always get better but, I like our aggressiveness. It was a great first game back for us. It gave everyone a chance to get on the floor and play against someone else."
Rodgers led SFCC in scoring with 26 points, including knocking down three of six three-point shots and 11 of 15 from the field. Freshman guard Sophia Edwin contributed 18 points and a team-high six assists. Freshman forward Nevaeh Hill pitched in with 13 points and tied for the team lead in steals with sophomore forward Kayla Sullivan and freshman guard Chiney Idika with three each. Freshman forward Shae Wright added 11 points. Sophomore guard Madison Johnson led SFCC with eight rebounds.
