Lady Roadrunners open Conference play with victory

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners notched a come-from-behind 70-69 victory to open Missouri Community College Athletic Conference play against Jefferson College in Hillsboro on Saturday, Dec. 2. The victory was the 10th in a row for SFCC.

SFCC (10-0) trailed 21-17 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Roadrunners fought back to tie the game at 35 at halftime. They had a 44-39 lead with less than five minutes remaining in the third quarter. SFCC extended the advantage to 12 points with about seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Jefferson erased the advantage and took a 67-66 lead with about a minute remaining. Jefferson led 69-68 with 13.7 seconds remaining after a basket from SFCC sophomore center Jaida Shipp. SFCC stole the ensuing inbounds pass and scored a basket to take a one-point lead. Jefferson had one more opportunity in the waning seconds, but SFCC held on for the victory.

Freshman guard Myra Claas led the team in scoring with 18 points, including the game-winning basket. Shipp contributed 17 points on six of seven shooting. Freshman guard Nakayla Green pitched in with 11 points and tied for the team lead in assists with four. Freshman guard Madison Johnson tied for the team lead in assists with four and tied for the team lead in rebounds with seven with sophomore guard Tanila Marshall. Johnson led the team in steals with three.
