Lady Roadrunners Basketball Recaps February 17-22

Feb. 17 Crowder College at Sedalia

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners lost at home 90-70 to the Crowder College Lady Roughriders in a Region 16 game on Monday, Feb. 17.

SFCC started the game with a 21-15 lead at the end of the first quarter. Crowder took control of the contest in the second quarter outscoring SFCC 35-17. Crowder forced the Lady Roadrunners into 18 turnovers and shot 43% from the field for the game.

Sophomore guard/forward Nadia Thorman-McKey of Evanston, Illinois led four Lady Roadrunners in double figures scoring with 17 points. She finished her double-double with 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Kaiya Braggs of Ruston, Louisiana contributed 15 points. She also dished out a team-high eight assists. Freshman guard Ryann Haynes of St. Louis pitched in with 14 points. Freshman guard Aleah Bell of Margate, Florida added 10 points. Freshman guard Laila McNeal of Chicago, Illinois had a team-high 12 rebounds and two blocked shots.

Feb. 19 Jefferson College at Hillsboro, Missouri

SFCC dropped a heartbreaking 83-80 Region 16 and Missouri Community College Athletic Conference game to the Jefferson College Lady Vikings on Wednesday, Feb. 19 in Hillsboro.

The Lady Roadrunners trailed 21-18 at the end of one quarter. SFCC got its offense going in the second quarter, outscoring Jefferson 25-16 to lead the Lady Vikings 43-37 at halftime. The Lady Roadrunners pushed the lead to 12 at the end of three quarters.

The Lady Vikings put together a big fourth quarter run, outscoring the Lady Roadrunners by 15 points to storm back and secure the victory.

Thorman-McKey once again led the Lady Roadrunners in scoring with 23 points. She finished her double-double with 12 rebounds. Freshman guard/forward Darlisha Reed of Gary, Indiana contributed another double-double with 21 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. McNeal also recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. She blocked a team-high two shots. Haynes dished out a team-high six assists and led her team in steals with four.

 

Feb. 22 Mineral Area College at Sedalia

SFCC fell at home to the Mineral Area College Lady Cardinals 74-58 on Saturday, Feb. 22. The game was the final Region 16 and Missouri Community College Athletic Conference game of the regular season and Homecoming for SFCC.

The Lady Roadrunners (6-22, 0-10 in Region 16, 2-8 in the MCCAC) led 17-16 at the end of one quarter.

The Lady Cardinals outscored the Lady Roadrunners 24-14 in the second quarter to take a 40-31 lead into the locker room at halftime. SFCC cut the lead to eight in the fourth quarter, but Mineral Area had an answer to secure the victory.

"I told them in the fourth quarter that you have to keep fighting," said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. "We were out rebounded, which has been a struggle for us all season. We didn't shoot the ball very well. We missed a lot of open shots."

Thorman-McKey registered yet another double-double with 24 points and 13 rebounds. She led her team in both categories. Reed pitched in with 15 points. Haynes recorded a team-high six assists and led the team in steals with two. Braggs blocked a team-high four shots.
