Lady Roadrunners Basketball Recap Jan. 15-18

Jan. 15 Moberly Area Community College at Sedalia

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners lost 114-49 at home to the Moberly Area Community College Lady Greyhounds on Wednesday, Jan. 15 in a Region 16 and Missouri Community College Athletic Conference game.

The Lady Greyhounds led by 18 points in the first quarter and never looked back. Moberly shot 52.4% from the field for the game and a blistering 50% from beyond the three-point arc for the contest.

"We did not do a good job of executing our game plan," said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. "We have to do a better job of competing. Tonight was the best I've seen Moberly shoot the three-point shot."

Sophomore guard/forward Nadia Thorman-McKey of Evanston, Illinois led her team in scoring with 16 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Thorman-McKey tied for the team lead in blocked shots with sophomore guard/forward Connor Watkins of Charleston, Missouri with two each. Freshman guard Ryann Haynes of St. Louis, Missouri pitched in with 11 points. Freshman guard Paula Barrientos of Puerto Montt, Chile and freshman guard Aleah Bell of Margate, Florida had three assists each.

Jan. 18 Jefferson College at Sedalia

SFCC (6-14, 0-3 in Region 16, 2-3 in the MCCAC) lost at home 88-82 to the Jefferson College Lady Vikings from Hillsboro, Missouri on Saturday, Jan. 18. SFCC honored their sophomores Watkins and Thorman-McKey at halftime of the contest.

 The Lady Roadrunners struggled to handle the full court pressure defense from the Lady Vikings and trailed 24-15 at the end of one quarter.

"We talked at halftime about what we needed to do to get better," said Lady Roadrunners Assistant Coach Jade Perry. "I also changed up our defense a little bit. I just told our team to do the little things that we've been working on like blocking out and rebounding."

SFCC trimmed the deficit to 68-59 at the end of three quarters. SFCC continued to battle, however Jefferson had all the answers down the stretch to secure the hard-fought victory.

Thorman-McKey registered a double-double with 29 points and 12 rebounds and registered three steals to lead her team in all three categories. Freshman guard Kaiya Braggs of Ruston, Louisiana contributed 15 points. Freshman guard/forward Darlisha Reed of Gary, Indiana added 12 points. Freshman guard Laila McNeal of Chicago, Illinois chipped in with 11. Haynes dished out a team-high seven assists.
