Lady Roadrunners defeat Lady Greyhounds

The Lady Roadrunners (17-8, 6-2 in Region 16, 6-2 in the MCCAC) picked up a 62-61 victory over the Moberly Area Community College Lady Greyhounds on Feb. 18, which was Homecoming and Sophomore Night.

SFCC had a 14-2 run to erase an early deficit and led 20-17 at the end of the first quarter. By halftime, the Lady Roadrunners led 40-27.

"We were able to get out in transition, hit shots and rebound," said Head Coach Kevin Bucher. "It was a total team effort."

But the Lady Greyhounds stayed in the game and took a one-point lead with about two minutes 30 seconds left in the third quarter, which ended with the Lady Roadrunners clinging to a one-point lead.

With six minutes left in the game, Moberly pulled ahead 56-51. SFCC found itself down two points in the waning seconds of the contest, when freshman guard Maya Brewer got the ball on the corner. She was able to pump fake and knock down a three-point shot for the win. "Looking at Maya's shot from my angle, it looked like it was right on," said Bucher. "You have to have some guts to be able to take that shot; a lot of people would've passed the ball. It was nothing but net; what a great shot! We were out of timeouts, so we couldn't set up a defensive play. I just hoped they would be able to defend."

Moberly was able to get off a shot before the buzzer sounded.

Sophomore guard Alexis Cowan led in scoring with 11 points. Seven Lady Roadrunners scored six points or more in the game. Cowan and freshman center Farasia Hodge tied for the lead in rebounds with four each. Freshman center Grace Morrow registered a team-high three blocked shots. Freshman guard Ren'Cia Rolling dished out a team-high seven assists and led in steals with three.

"I want to thank the fans who were here tonight," said Bucher. "We had a great atmosphere to play in."

The Lady Roadrunners finish the home portion of their regular season at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 21 against Jefferson College in another Region 16 and MCCAC game.
