Lady Roadrunners sweep Moberly classic

The 18th ranked Lady Roadrunners traveled to Moberly Nov. 25-26 for the Midwest Bone and Joint Center Classic. SFCC (6-4) secured a pair of wins defeating Highland Community College Lady Cougars from Freeport, Illinois, and Lincoln Land Community College Lady Loggers from Springfield, Illinois. 

On Friday, the Lady Roadrunners got off to a slow start against the Lady Cougars with a 13-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. SFCC then went on a 9-0 run to take a 10-point lead with under two minutes left in the second quarter. By halftime, SFCC led Highland 30-22. 

Near the end of the third quarter, Highland tied the game at 38. Sophomore guard Alexis Cowan grabbed an offensive rebound and scored as the third quarter expired to give SFCC a 43-40 lead. 

In the final quarter, SFCC outscored Highland 19-12 to emerge with a 62-52 win. The game featured four lead changes and two ties. 

Sophomore center Kendra Boone and freshman guard Maya Brewer tied for team lead in points with 12 each. Alexis Cowan raked in a team-high six rebounds. Freshman guard Takayla Gunter dished out a team-high four assists. Boone led in blocked shots with three, and sophomore guard Danaé Cole led in steals with three. 

On Saturday, SFCC outscored the Lady Loggers 28-7 in the second quarter to take control of the game and defeated Lincoln Land 91-58. 

Alexis Cowan led in scoring with 27 points. Cole was second highest with 18. Freshman guard/forward Catie Kaifes added 11 points. Boone led in rebounds with nine. Freshman guard Ren'Cia Rolling handed out a team-high three assists and tied for the most steals with Alexis Cowan with three apiece. With their pressure defense, the Lady Roadrunners forced the Lady Loggers to commit 28 turnovers. 

SFCC returns home at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 30 to take on the Fort Scott Community College Lady Greyhounds.
