Lady Roadrunners Win Homecoming Game

Lady Roadrunners Win Homecoming Game

The 12th-ranked Lady Roadrunners picked up their 20th win of the season Feb.14 when they defeated the Moberly Area Community College Lady Greyhounds 84-60 in front of a large crowd at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center. The victory was the 10th in a row for SFCC.

"Moberly is the only team that beat us at home last year in region play," said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. "We talked about making sure that didn't happen tonight. We were determined and hungry, and it was a great night for Homecoming. We had five players in double figures. I was very pleased with how we shared the basketball."

A layup from sophomore guard Erin Boothe gave the Lady Roadrunners a 21-14 advantage with just under 11 minutes remaining in the first half. SFCC (20-5, 8-0 in Region 16) took a 44-29 lead into halftime.

"We just had to get things started," said Bucher. "It takes us a while to get our pressure going and force the other team to run the way we want them to. The sooner we get our opponent out and running, the sooner they get tired—and then they start turning the ball over."

SFCC outscored Moberly by nine points in the second half to secure the victory. The Lady Roadrunners forced 23 turnovers and scored 27 points off of those turnovers.

Sophomore guard Sannayyiah Johnson led the scoring with 16 points, including three of five from beyond the three-point arc, and also dished out a team-high five assists. Freshman guards Maura Skidmore and Sierra Clayborn and sophomore center Alecia Cooley each scored 13 points, and Skidmore also splashed home three three-point shots. Cooley finished off another double double with a team-high 13 rebounds and led in blocked shots with three. Boothe pitched in with 12 points. Freshman guard/forward Tyisha Saunders registered a team-high five steals.

"I was very pleased with tonight's performance," said Bucher. "Moberly has been playing some close games. It was a great win."

The Lady Roadrunners will close out their three-game home stand and the regular season home schedule Feb.18 with a Region 16 and Missouri Community College Athletic Conference game against the Jefferson College Lady Vikings from Hillsboro, Missouri. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center.
