Three members of the State Fair Community College archery team competed at The Vegas Shoot, hosted by the National Field Archery Association, from March 5-9.
Freshman Leann Drake of Lexington shot an 893 out of 900 in the Championship Compound Female Division, competing against top archers from around the world. The division featured 102 competitors, and Drake placed 52nd.
"Leann shot very well," head coach Manuel said. "These are the best of the best in the world. Competing in that division is an honor. If you are one of the best archers, that's the division you're competing in. She shot well at the event. The person who won had a perfect weekend, shooting 900 out of 900. These are the type of people who make world and national teams."
Sophomore John Armeutrout of Hume scored 860 out of 900 to finish second in Flight 24 of the Men's Compound Flight Division. Armeutrout started strong in his final round and closed well.
"I was very proud of the way John and Parker controlled their nerves," Manuel said. "John finished the week on a high note. I expected great things from him, and he delivered. I was super proud of him for seeing that stage for the first time and moving forward."
Freshman Parker Hayes of Higginsville scored 873 out of 900 in the Men's Compound Flight Division.
"Parker was very consistent throughout the three days of competition," Manuel said. "He shot a 291 each day. That consistency is key in archery. He definitely has the skill set, and it will be great to see it grow."
