The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Archery team battled the competition and the elements at the USA Archery Collegiate 3D Nationals, which began on Friday, October 3 in Foley, Alabama. SFCC was represented by Leann Drake, Parker Hayes, and John Aremetrout.
Drake finished ninth in the women's compound division with a score of 412, 10 points shy of first place. Aremetrout placed 47th in the men's compound division with a score of 383. Hayes placed 48th in the men's compound division with a score of 382.
"On Friday we were supposed to shoot 20 targets in the morning and 20 targets in the afternoon," said Head Coach Sarah Manuel. "The state of Alabama is still experiencing the rain from a hurricane. It rained from Thursday night all the way to Friday night. We had a two-hour delayed start on Friday, the kids shot 20 arrows in five hours. We didn't finish up until 4 p.m. We shot the second 20 individual targets on Saturday morning."
Coach Manuel was proud of the way the student-athletes handled the weather and other changes at the event.
"Our kids did a good job of keeping their composure when they were out in the rain for that long," said Manuel. "It was a downpour for 24 hours. Parker, John, and Leann did a great job with their mental game. You can't control the physical aspects. Everyone is under the same conditions. They were all shooting in two to three inches of water. Everything is wet, it's not ideal for anybody. The targets on the course were very challenging. It was a good experience for our kids. Now, we have to get ready for our indoor season."
