The State Fair Community College (SFCC) archery team competed at the William Woods 3D Exhibition held on Thursday, September 12 at Macon Farm in Macon, Missouri.
"In the 3D archery discipline, the kids are in and out of different terrain," said Head Coach Sarah Manuel. "There is an open field terrain and a wooded terrain. The animal targets are placed in the woods and the archers have to go through trees and take different shots. At this event, there were 30 different targets. It got dark a little bit quicker than we were anticipating, so some kids only got to 24 targets and other kids only got to 25 targets."
There was a men and women's Compound Bow division to go along with a men and women's Fixed Pin Division and a men and women's Barebow Division.
Freshman Parker Hayes shot a 258 out of 300 to take first place in the Men's Compound Division. Sophomore John Aremetrout shot a 246 out of 300 to take second place in the Men's Compound Division. In the Men's Barebow Division, freshman Zaydin Cunningham shot a 99 out of 288 to take first place in that division. Freshman Cassidy Huddleston shot a 204 out of 300 to take second place in the Women's Compound division.
"I thought we shot really well for our first competition," said Manuel. "I think our kids enjoyed getting the opportunity to get out and get their nerves out in competition. I was really proud that they were able to keep their spirits up, even though they didn't necessarily finish the course.
"I believe that our kids are ready to go to the regional competition next weekend in Illinois," said Manuel. "I'm looking forward to our kids getting to compete in different terrain. The terrain we competed in at William Woods had a lot of changes in elevation on it with narrow lanes. The terrain in Illinois will be more open range. We will see how the kids can transfer their skills."
