SFCC softball recaps Feb. 28 to March 4

Feb. 28 at Kansas City Kansas Community College 

The Lady Roadrunners dropped a pair of one-run games to suffer their first losses of the season against the Lady Blue Devils. 

The first game was scoreless until the sixth inning when SFCC got on the scoreboard. KCKCC answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. The Blue Devils scored a run in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to win 2-1. 

SFCC freshman utility player Mikayla Gustin recorded the only hit and RBI of the game. She drove in freshman infielder Sydnee Cotter

Freshman pitcher MacKenze Gudde pitched the entire game, giving up two runs and one earned run while striking out two. 

In game two, KCKCC scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and added one in the second. SFCC responded with three runs in the third. KCKCC added one in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 advantage. SFCC tied the game in the fourth and tacked on three runs to lead 7-4 going into the bottom of the sixth. 

KCKCC scored four runs in the sixth for an 8-7 win. 

SFCC sophomore outfielder Kalee Shumaker and freshman pitcher Madison Harris registered two hits apiece. Harris had three RBIs, and freshman catcher/infielder Emily Guyton scored two runs. Sophomore catcher/infielder Sarah McAninch knocked in two runs. 

Harris pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up eight runs and six earned runs with one strikeout. Gudde pitched the final two thirds of the inning. 

March 1 at Mandy Thomas Field, Centennial Park

The Lady Roadrunners split a double header against the Fort Scott Community College Lady Greyhounds, winning the first game 12-11 and losing the second 13-4. 

After three innings, the Lady Roadrunners trailed 5-1 but started chipping away in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman designated player Makayla Sivils hit a two-run home run over the center field fence. FSCC added a run in the top of the fifth, but SFCC answered with an eight-run surge to take the lead 11-6. 

The Lady Greyhounds scored five to tie the game. In the bottom of the seventh, Lady Roadrunners Sydnee Cotter singled, and after another base hit and wild pitch that moved runners to second and third, Mikayla Gustin hit a single to score Cotter for the 12-11 win.

MacKenze Gudde paced the SFCC offense with four hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Sarah McAninch recorded two hits and two RBIs. Gustin had two hits and RBIs. Emily Guyton added two hits and two runs scored. Kalee Shumaker had a team-high three RBIs. 

Gudde got the start in the circle. She was relieved by Harris who pitched three innings, giving up four runs and striking out one. Gudde came back into the game to close and picked up the win. She pitched four innings total, giving up seven runs, three earned runs and striking out one. 

In the second game, the Lady Greyhounds scored four runs in the top of the first and added at least another run in every inning but the fifth. SFCC scored four runs in the fifth. The Lady Greyhounds won 13-4 in six innings because of the run rule. 

The Lady Roadrunners struggled offensively in the second game, recording only five hits as a team. Cotter, Gudde, McAninch and Gustin each recorded an RBI. Harris was the starting and losing pitcher. She pitched three innings, gave up eight runs and five earned runs and struck out one. 

March 2 at Mandy Thomas Field, Centennial Park 

The Lady Roadrunners were swept 12-6 and 18-5 by Kansas City Kansas Community College. 

In the first game, SFCC trailed 5-0 into the bottom of the third inning. The Lady Roadrunners came alive and scored six runs to take a 6-5 lead. KCKCC tied the game with a run in the fourth and added four more runs in the fifth to take control. 

MacKenze Gudde pitched the whole game. She had a pair of hits at the plate, including a home run and four RBIs. Freshmen Madison Harris and Sarah Loomis recorded one RBI apiece. 

In game two, SFCC scored three runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth. Gudde and McAninch hit home runs. Gudde, Gustin, Sivils, and Guyton each recorded a pair of hits. Harris was the pitcher for 4 2/3 innings and took the loss. 

March 4 at Mandy Thomas Field, Centennial Park

SFCC lost a double header to Northern Oklahoma College-Enid, 9-1 and 4-2. 

In the first game, NOC-E got on the scoreboard first with five runs and added another run in the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, SFCC's Gudde scored a run. NOC-E tacked on three in the seventh to seal the victory. 

Gudde (3-3) went the distance in the circle. She allowed nine runs, six of them were earned. Shumaker had the only hit in the game. 

In the second game, freshman pitcher Emily Ross made her first appearance as a Lady Roadrunner. SFCC scored in the bottom of the first when McAninch doubled home Cotter to put SFCC up 1-0. 

Northern Oklahoma scored two runs in the third and added two more in the sixth to take the lead 4-1. 

SFCC loaded the bases in the seventh courtesy of a walk from Gustin. Harris singled back up the middle to score Gudde to make the final score 4-2. 

Ross (0-1) took the loss. She allowed six hits and four runs while striking out seven. McAninch had a pair of hits in the game and walked twice. 

"We've had runners on base and opportunities to score runs in most of our game," said Head Coach Lyndsey Talbot. "We were just missing a couple of timely hits." 

SFCC is now 5-7 on the season.
